Paul McCartney opened up about his friendship with his late bandmate, John Lennon, and spilt some details about the Beatles star's famous relationship with Yoko Ono

The 83-year-old music legend chatted about his old friend, who was tragically shot by an obsessed fan on December 8 1980, outside his apartment building in New York City.

John was married to the Japanese multimedia artist, singer, and peace activist Yoko, now 93, from March 1969 until his death 11 years later.

The famous couple first met in 1966 and were romantically involved for around 14 years; however, it appears their relationship wasn't all smooth sailing.

Paul, a close friend of John for 23 years following their first meeting in 1957, revealed details about the early days of the couple's romance during an interview in 2015.

Ahead of his upcoming documentary about his life post-Beatles, Man on the Run, Paul's historic chat with Vanity Fair was published, in which he shared a secret Yoko told him about John.

He told the publication: "I swear she [Yoko] rang me shortly after John died and said, 'You know, I think John might have been gay.'

"I went, 'I'm not sure.' I said, 'I don't think so. Certainly not when I knew him.' Because we'd been in the '60s. We'd been around with loads and loads of girls."

The musician continued: "And I'd slept with John very often, but there was never anything. There was never a gesture, never an expression. It was nothing. So I had no reason to believe this at all."

Paul did go on to admit he had heard other rumours about John's sexuality, especially that he was involved with the band's manager, Brian Epstein, but he confirmed he didn't think there was any truth to them.

Whispers about the manager and the singer started after they took a 12-day, private holiday to Barcelona and Torremolinos, Spain, in April 1963.

Despite the rumours, the world-famous singer and the artist enjoyed a romance that spanned more than a decade and following their 10-minute ceremony at the British Consulate office in Gibraltar, they became a family of three.

Sean Ono Lennon, now 50, was born in 1975 on his father's 35th birthday, six years after the couple's nuptials.

John was also a father to Julian Lennon, now 62, whom he welcomed with his first wife, Cynthia Lennon, in 1963. The couple divorced in 1968 after tying the knot in 1962.

Also a parent before meeting Paul, Yoko has a daughter named Kyoko Ono Cox, now 62, with her second ex-husband, filmmaker Anthony Cox.

Sean previously opened up about his parents' relationship and told The Telegraph: "Anyone who pays attention to John and Yoko in the latter part of the Beatles, and then together through the Seventies, can see that my dad had this feeling that John and Yoko had sort of fused into one person.

"He had all these terms [like] 'JOKO'! He said that they were one, and there should be one word: JohnandYoko."
