Meet Barbra Streisand's famous first husband she met age 19: 'I wasn't ready for marriage'
Fanny Brice star Barbra fell in love on Broadway in the 1960s after meeting her co-star, who would become her first husband and father of her son, Jason
Funny Girl star Barbra Streisand was one of the most coveted women in Hollywood from the late 1960s through the 1970s. An Oscar-winner and once the most successful female singer in the United States, she was - and still is - a force to be reckoned with.
Finding love in Hollywood has proven difficult for even the most lustrous of stars; however, in 1961, Barbra believed she had found her happily ever after in her first husband, Elliott Gould.
The pair were married from 1963 to 1971 and share one son together, Jason Gould, whom they welcomed in 1966.
Barbra and Elliott were the It couple of show business's swinging sixties era, but it all came crashing down in the 70s when they filed for divorce and went their separate ways. Let's meet the man who stole Fanny Brice's heart…
The actress ran into the fellow actor during auditions for the Broadway show I Can Get It for You Wholesale in 1961.
Barbra was 19 at the time of their meeting and was trying out for a role in the play that Elliott was already starring in.
During an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Elliott remembered: "So after the last audition, they say, 'Thank you.' She then was very flummoxed as to being right there and not knowing what was going to happen next, and so she announced her phone number and said, 'So would somebody call me.' I remembered her number, and I called her."
Notoriously private about their relationship, the couple never revealed any details about their engagement or wedding plans, but it was confirmed that they got married on 14 September 1963.
According to reports from the time, the famous couple honeymooned in California at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
In her memoir, My Name Is Barbra, the star revealed an insight into her relationship with Elliott and said: "I loved Elliott. He was familiar to me … from Brooklyn, down-to-earth. But I still wasn’t sure I was ready for marriage.
"After all, I was only twenty-one, and he was my first serious boyfriend. I didn’t want this marriage thing to become a big deal."
Three years after their wedding day, Barbra and Elliott became first-time parents to a little boy they named Jason Gould, who was born on 29 December 1966.
The star's only child with Elliott went on to follow in her footsteps and has worked as a singer, actor, and director, performing alongside his mother. He made his film debut in 1989's Say Anything... and starred with her in The Prince of Tides in 1991.
In 1971, after eight years of marriage, Barbra and Elliott decided to go their separate ways and file for divorce.
During Elliott's interview with CBS, he opened up about the experience and cited difficulties growing together as the reason for their split.
He revealed: "We didn’t grow together, and the reason for that was because she became more important than us. Then I also said to her, 'We did great. We made it very fast, and nobody has what we have. There’s you and me and our kid.' "
The pair remained civil in the years that followed, and Barbra told The New York Times: "Once you have loved someone, they become part of what you were and therefore part of what you are."
After their relationship ended, both parties moved on with other people. Elliott married Jennifer Bogart in 1973; however, they finally divorced in 1979 after welcoming two children together: Samuel and Molly.
Barbra remarried in 1998 when she tied the knot with her husband James Brolin.
