Exes Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman reunited on Valentine's Day, attending the wedding of their daughter, actress Maya Hawke, in New York City. Photographed on Saturday, the A-listers – who were married from 1998 to 2005 – headed to St. George's Episcopal Church in Manhattan, where they watched Maya and her groom, musician Christian Lee Hutson, say 'I do'. A star-studded affair, Uma and Ethan were also seen walking alongside family and friends, including the cast of Stranger Things, to the reception at The Players, a private members' club in Gramercy Park.
While Ethan and Uma, both 55, are rarely in the same vicinity these days, the duo have continued to co-parent their two children – Maya, 27, and son Levon, 24. Following their heavily publicised split in 2003, Ethan and Uma have reflected on the breakdown of their marriage in interviews, while refusing to talk negatively of one another.
Why did Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman split?
Neither Ethan nor Uma have given a specific reason for their split, however, they have suggested that their romance simply fizzled out. After announcing their decision to separate in 2003, the former couple were confronted with reports that Ethan had been unfaithful while filming a movie in Montreal. "Uma and I did not split up over anybody's infidelity," Ethan told 20/20 in 2004. "We had a lot of problems before I ever went to Montreal."
More recently, the Before Sunrise star admitted that the press coverage that he and Uma dealt with in their relationship was "humiliating". Speaking with GQ in September 2025, Ethan said: "It's humiliating. It's almost humiliating even when they're saying positive things."
Asked about their romance, which began on the set of Gattaca in 1997, he replied: "Have you ever played Spin the Bottle? There's a certain intimacy to the work that we do. Imaginative intimacy. It's such a high. It feels dangerous and thrilling. It turns the temperature up in your life. It can be like falling in love at summer camp. It doesn't have any connection to the dailiness of real life. That's the danger of it."
As for Uma, the Kill Bill icon has reflected on their "excruciating" divorce, which she famously discussed with Oprah Winfrey in 2005 (via People). "You can move on, and you can be lucky and you can seize the moment and you can take one step after another," the actress began. "You bear two children with somebody – that's not a small thing – and then you can hardly talk to them."
Stating that they'd continued to communicate even when it's "very difficult", Uma added: "I think that that's such a priority to protect them [the kids] and to never lose sight of the fact that even if you're in a fight, or even if things are going badly, it's in their best interests that everybody comes out okay."
"He's made an effort," she said of Ethan, "and I try to make an effort and, you know, we just keep trying." Maintaining this sentiment, Uma has also refused to speak badly of her ex-husband in interviews. "I cannot participate in anything critical about my children's father," the Red, White & Royal Blue star told Parade magazine in 2006. "I just need to keep peace. I think it's fair to say that I haven't said one mean thing, and I'm not going to start now. It's terrible for my family."
"If I see one more headline about it, I'll gag. I'm just another American woman who was in an unfulfilled marriage that fell apart."
