Not many actors can claim that one of their most well-known roles is the focus of watch-party binges across the US but Geraldine James, along with her The Jewel in the Crown co-stars, is one of the fortunate few. The actress has gone on to star in Netflix hits like Anne with an E, appeared alongside acting royalty Vanessa Redgrave in The Fever (2004) and continues to prove herself as a razor-sharp character study and powerful presence, both on-stage and on-screen.
For those lucky enough to be in the audience (at least twice in my case) for her most-recent role in Creditors, the actress shows no signs of slowing down. Just as she's found success in her career, Geraldine seems to have built a happy and bustling family life, with regular snippets shared on her Instagram. Join us for a look inside her personal life, early childhood and check in on what the actress is getting up to next.
Joseph Blatchley and Geraldine James have been married for 40 years
Who is Joseph Blatchley?
Joseph Blatchley was born in London on 27 November 1948. Like his wife, he’s found success in the entertainment industry, with credits on The Flight of the Heron (1976) and Incognito (1997). While the exact details of how they met have been kept private, the couple married in June 1986 and have remained happily together ever since.
According to his LinkedIn, he worked as a director and teacher at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, for 16 years between 1991 and 2007, with freelance directorial roles in the UK and France until 2012. He features regularly on Geraldine’s Instagram, most recently in a snapshot with Geraldine, their daughter Ellie and their two grandchildren on the actresses’ birthday which she captioned: “¾ of a century in! Fabulous sun and rain filled day and joy all around!”

Who is Ellie Blatchley?
The 41-year-old daughter of actors Joseph Blatchley and Geraldine James, Ellie Blatchley, has opted for a life away from the spotlight, making appearances on the red carpet in support of her mother’s successes. She worked for over 5 years in the Human Rights sector before acting as an Independent Sexual Violence Advocate in support of sexual abuse survivors trying to navigate the criminal justice system.
She later retrained and now works as an Integrative Art Psychotherapist in South London with a Master's Degree in Integrative Arts Psychotherapy from the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education. She is married to James Asfa, Assistant Director at Citizens UK and they share two children together.

Childhood and upbringing
The Jewel in the Crown star was born in Maidenhead in 1950 as the second of three children. She described her parents to The Guardian in 2011 as an “ill-matched pair”. The couple separated when she was 14. She was particularly close to her father until she chose to pursue acting at which point, she says, “He flung me out”. Fortunately, the actress soon proved herself in the industry and to her father. “He sent me a letter when I won a BAFTA for my first film saying that he was wrong, I was right, and he was very glad about it.”
Geraldine has an older brother and her younger sister, Caroline, who sadly passed away. She spoke to the Daily Mail in 2009 about struggling to understand her mother’s alcoholism when she was younger: “My brother and sister and I had no one to turn to, and we never spoke about it. We thought we were freaks. When you’re a child, you blame yourself and think you’re a bad person because Mummy is in bed crying and won’t get up.”
Geraldine James' star role in The Jewel in the Crown helped to make her a household name
A jewel on screen
The four-time BAFTA nominee has appeared in the likes of Dummy (1977), The Jewel in the Crown (1984) and Band of Gold (1995), as well as more recent hits like Calendar Girls (2000), Downton Abbey (2019) and Anne with an E (2017-2019). Roles like Downton's Queen Mary and adoptive mother Marilla Cuthbert have shown her acting chops and call back to a strength that runs through each of her character roles.
Her on-stage credits are equally impressive, and Geraldine has worked alongside the likes of Jude Law in the 2009 Broadway production of Hamlet and Dustin Hoffman in 1989's The Merchant of Venice.
Geraldine James is perhaps best known for her role as Sarah Layton in The Jewel in the Crown
The Jewel in the Crown
Geraldine James took over viewer's TV screens across the country in the latter part of acclaimed period drama The Jewel in the Crown. She starred as the intelligent, grounded protagonist of the 1984 series, Sarah Layton, in what some publications described as a "portrait of a world on the verge of collapse" during the decline of the British Raj and following partition.
Sarah Layton later finds love with Charles Dance's Guy Perron, the role that made him a recognisable star, and continues to evade Tim Pigott-Smith's downright terrifying Ronald Merrick. Over the years, Geraldine has reunited with her co-stars from the 14-episode epic, appearing as Dance's sister in 1997's Rebecca.

What’s she up to now?
Geraldine is heading back to the stage for her 2026 debut in Chichester as the star of 45 Years, a theatrical adaptation of the 2015 movie of the same name. The story follows a young woman trapped in ice a thousand miles from Geraldine's Kate and her husband Geoff who are due to celebrate their wedding anniversary, until a letter from Switzerland causes cracks in their marriage.
She recently appeared in hit TV series Dope Girls (2025), Run Away (2026) and enjoyed a reunion with The Jewel in the Crown co-stars Charles Dance and Nicholas Farrell in an adaptation of August Strindberg's Creditors.
