Dad's Army remains one of Britain's favourite sitcoms. The BBC show, which revolves around members of the Replica Luxury Handbag Guard during World War II, is still regularly being broadcast.
One of the show's signature stars was Arnold Ridley, who played the ineffective Private Godfrey, a conscientious objector during World War I, although he still saw active service as a stretcher bearer, an achievement that saw him made the platoon's First Aid Officer.
While his character was an objector to the war, Arnold served in World War I, before being medically discharged in 1917. He fought in the Battle of the Somme, picking up injuries that left his left hand useless. He also received shrapnel injuries in his legs, and continued to have blackouts following the war after receiving a blow to the head from an enemy's rifle butt.
Born in 1896, Arnold was aged 76 when he landed a role in the sitcom, which was first aired in 1968 before ending in 1977. He made his screen debut back in 1949, appearing as Mr Saunders in an uncredited role in The Interrupted Journey.
The star, who died at the age of 88 in 1984, also appeared in the likes of Stolen Face, Carry On Girls, Crossroads, The Caesars and Special Branch.
Arnold was married three times and was a father to his son, Nicolas, a playwright and biographer. However, the star has close Hollywood connections due to being the great-uncle of the actress Daisy Ridley.
Daisy Ridley
Daisy shot to fame in 2015 when she portrayed Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. The star further cemented her status as a Hollywood icon by appearing in the likes of Murder on the Orient Express, Chaos Walking and Sometimes I Think About Dying.
Arnold sadly never met his A-list great-niece, with the actor passing away eight years before she was born in 1992. Daisy's screen debut, in a 2013 episode of Casualty, came nearly 30 years after the star died.
However, Daisy has a lot of respect for her great-uncle, and she previously spoke about him and her parents back in 2015 when it was announced that a film based on the sitcom would be made, with the late Michael Gambon playing the role that Arnold did.
"They're redoing it as a film," she said. "synMichael Gambon, who played Dumbledore [in the Harry Potter films] is playing who my great uncle played. Both my parents are creative. My dad did act when he was younger, but they're both very creative."
