While Carey Mulligan stars in one half of an unravelling marriage in the highly-anticipated second season of Netflix's Beef, off-screen, the star's love story with her rock star husband sounds like something straight out of a rom-com. The British actress, 40, has been married to musician Marcus Mumford, 39, of Mumford & Sons fame, since 2012 and shares three children with him.
The couple's love story goes way back to when they were childhood pen pals and before either of them was in the spotlight. The pair reconnected in their adult years and transitioned their long-term friendship into romantic love. These days, Carey and Marcus have built a family life with their three young children in a farmhouse in Devon.
While they keep their kids out of the spotlight, Carey recently revealed she and her little ones joined Marcus and his band on their tour bus. "It's great fun," she said of being on the road during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel's chat show this month, adding that the kids "love it".

After tying the knot in a barn wedding in Somerset in April 2012, Carey and Marcus welcomed their first child, a daughter named Evelyn Grace, in September 2015. Not long after becoming a first-time mum, the actress was back to work for a film with Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Carter.
"We started press for Suffragette like three weeks after I gave birth to my daughter, so you just get back into it and it’s fine, because it’s not like filming, where you need to use your brain all the time. It’s much more about kind of showing up," she told Vogue in 2018.
Along with the joys of motherhood, Carey has been open about her struggle with postpartum depression after welcoming her first child, and admitted to People in 2022 that she had felt "very alone, and very scared, and also very confused by the whole experience".
Wilfred, 8
Carey and Marcus became parents again in August 2017 when they welcomed their son, Wilfred. While they keep their son's privacy, the pair have made the occasional comment over the years about their growing family.
"I’m lucky, I feel very happy, I’ve got the dream job, a lovely husband, this incredible family," Carey told The Times in 2018. "But you hear a song that you listened to when you were 19 and suddenly think, ‘Woah! I was 19 two minutes ago. Why am I 33 now?"
Another daughter
Carey confirmed she'd welcomed her third child, a daughter whose name she has yet to disclose, during an interview with Vogue in October 2023.
"It’s very normal," the actress told the outlet of her countryside routine with her husband and three children.
Carey was 12 weeks postpartum when she took on a new film, Ballad of Wallis Island. The actress ended up bringing her daughter with her to set, giving her newborn a very early glimpse at what her mum's life in Hollywood is like.
"She was upstairs in every house that we filmed in and I would just do the scene, go up, see her, feed her, and then come back down," Carey recalled the filming experience to People. "So they made it incredibly easy and it was kind of lovely."
