While the US is known for its acting dynasties spanning generations, this isn't as commonplace in the UK, although we are still home to some iconic ones.

One of the most famous is the Redgrave family, which includes screen icons Dame Vanessa Redgrave, Jemma Redgrave and Michael Richardson.

The family first got involved in the acting business all the way back in 1899 when original patriarch, Roy Redgrave, made his theatrical debut. Roy continued on the stage before he transitioned into acting in silent movies, including The Christian and Transported.

During his life, Roy was married three times, and he had five children. He first walked down the aisle with fellow thespian Ellen Maud Pratt, with the pair welcoming three children. However, Roy pursued an affair with actress Esther Cooke, who eventually bore him a son, Victor. The pair never married, but in 1907, he married actress Margaret Scudamore, with the pair having Roy's final child, Michael, who would truly kickstart the acting dynasty.

Roy and Margaret separated in 1908, and in 1916, he married for the final time, this time to widower Mary Leresche. Roy died at the age of 49 in 1922.

Michael's three children all followed him into acting

Sir Michael Redgrave

Born in 1908, Michael entered the family business in 1936 when he appeared in a production of Love's Labour Lost, playing Ferdinand. He made his West End debut the following year in a production of A Ship Comes Home, making his film debut in 1938's The Lady Vanishes.

Michael, who was knighted in 1959, continued acting in both movies and theatre productions, and a major career highlight came in 1948 when he received an Oscar nomination for his role in Mourning Becomes Electra. He was also nominated for BAFTA Awards for his roles in The Night My Number Came Up and Time Without Pity, while also winning Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival for The Browning Version.

In 1935, Michael married the actress Rachel Kempson, who was known for her roles in The Captive Heart and The Sea Shall Not Have Them, both of which she appeared in with her husband. The family had three children, Vanessa, Corin and Lynn, all of whom followed their parents into acting.

Michael had a strained relationship with his children, but started to repair it towards the end of his life. Speaking to Corin, who was dictating his autobiography, he confessed his bisexuality. A documentary explained that Michael initially didn't feel he should marry Rachel, but she was adamant they should wed due to her love for him.

In 1976, the actor was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, with doctors confirming that the illness was rapidly progressing. The actor died nine years later at the age of 77 on 21 March 1985; he had celebrated his birthday the day before his passing. Rachel later died at the age of 92 on 24 May 2003 following a stroke.

Michael and Rachel's eldest child is Vanessa, now aged 89, who has forged an incredible career, and is one of the few stars to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting, meaning that she has won an Academy Award, Emmy Award and Tony Award.

In 1958, she made her West End debut in A Touch of Sun, acting opposite her younger brother, Corin. She made her film debut the same year when she appeared as Pamela Gray in Behind the Mask.

Vanessa's most famous roles include Julia, which won her the Oscar, Howards End, The Gathering Storm, Playing for Time, which earned her an Emmy Award and Long Day's Journey into Night, which saw her win the Tony. She also won an Olivier Award for The Aspern Papers, while also winning an Emmy and Golden Globe for If These Walls Could Talk 2. Overall, she has been nominated for awards on 97 occasions!

The star is also known for her social activism, sometimes appearing in projects linked to historical issues, including the likes of The Palestinian, Playing for Time and Sea Sorrow, the latter of which served as her directorial debut and focused on the European migrant crisis. In 2005, she and Corin founded their own political party, the Peace and Progress Party, which opposed the Iraq War and campaigned for human rights.

In 1962, Vanessa married film director Tony Richardson, with the pair welcoming two daughters, Natasha and Joely, both of whom have become actresses. Tony left Vanessa for the French actress Jeanne Moreau; however, the star briefly found love again with Italian actor Franco Nero, with the pair welcoming a son, Carlo, who also became an actor. Between 1971 and 1986, she was in a relationship with Timothy Dalton, now known for his work in the Bond films, before she ended up reuniting with Franco. The couple married in 2006.

Corin was the second child of Michael and Rachel and was known for his stage roles in the likes of Henry IV Part I, The Seagull and A Song at Twilight, the latter of which saw him acting opposite Vanessa and his wife, Kika Markham.

Corin made his screen debut in 1964, playing a pilot in Camera Three, before going on to appear in the likes of The Avengers, A Man For All Seasons, The Charge of the Light Brigade, Excalibur, In the Name of the Father and Four Weddings and a Funeral. During his career, Corin was nominated for a Tony Award for Not About Nightingales.

In 1962, Corin married Deirdre Hamilton-Hill, and the pair welcomed two children, including the actress Jemma Redgrave. The pair divorced 13 years later, and Corin would find love again with the actress Kika Markham, known for her roles in Agatha Christie's Poirot, Operation Daybreak, Minder and Mr Selfridge.

Corin encountered several health issues during his life, including a diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2000 and suffered a near-fatal heart attack in 2005. He died at the age of 70 on 6 April 2010.

Born in 1943, Lynn was the youngest child of Michael and Rachel, and like her siblings, she found fame as an actress, with her career spanning for five decades. The star scooped two Golden Globes during her life, while also being nominated for two Oscars, four BAFTAs, two Emmys and three Tony Awards.

Lynn made her acting debut in 1960 when she had an uncredited role in Shoot to Kill and she appeared on stage for the first time in 1962 in a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Other major roles for the star include Georgy Girl, Gods and Monsters, Nightingale, The Constant Wife and Shine. Away from acting, she also served as a narrator for several audiobooks, including Inkheart.

Lynn found love in 1967 when she married the actor John Clark, known for his roles in Saint Joan, California Suite and Comedians. The couple welcomed three children, but they had an acrimonious divorce in 2000 when he confessed to being unfaithful with her personal assistant.

The actress died at the age of 67 on 2 May 2010, eight years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her death came less than a month after the death of her older brother Corin and a year after the death of her niece, Natasha Richardson.

Natasha Richardson

Born in 1963, Natasha was the eldest daughter of Vanessa and Tony Richardson, and she had a successful career when following in the footsteps of her parents. The highlight of the star's career came in 1998 when she won a Tony Award for her performance as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, she had previously been nominated in 1993 when she played the title character in Anna Christie.

The actress was also known for her roles in Gothic, The Handmaid's Tale, The Parent Trap, Maid in Manhattan and The Favour, the Watch and the Very Big Fish.

Natasha mixed the Redgrave dynasty with the Fox acting dynasty when she found love with filmmaker Robert Fox, although the pair divorced after being married for two years. While appearing in Anna Christie, she met the actor Liam Neeson and the pair married in 1994, later welcomed two sons, including the actor Micheal Richardson.

During a ski trip in 2009, Natasha sustained a head injury, although she refused medical assistance at the time. However, after complaining of a severe headache two hours later, she was admitted to hospital before being moved to intensive care. She was later declared brain dead and died at the age of 45 on 18 March 2009.

She has also acted alongside her brother-in-law, Liam Neeson, when they both appeared in Shining Through.

The fourth-generation member of the family hasn't yet scooped an award, but she has been nominated for five, four for Nip/Tuck and a further for Under Heaven.

In 1992, Joely married New Zealand film producer Tim Bevan, who is known for his work on My Beautiful Laundrette, Robin Hood and Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. The couple share a daughter, Daisy, who is part of the fifth generation of the family involved in acting.

Carlo is Vanessa and Franco's son, and while most of the Redgrave family are actors, Carlo instead focused on behind-the-scenes work, becoming a screenwriter and director. In a 2016 interview with The Times, Vanessa said: "It's no surprise that Carlo has ended up in the film business; he just happens to prefer being on the other side of the camera."

The star has worked with his family on several occasions and directed mum Vanessa and half-sister Joely in 2004 for The Fever, which also starred Angelina Jolie. He also worked with his mum on her documentary film Sea Sorrow.
