I'm rarely seen without a stack of bangles gracing my wrist, gemstone rings sparkling across my fingers or a pair of larger-than-life hoops framing my face. Yes, I’d happily call myself a jewellery connoisseur. From ornate, gold-hued adornments collected on a whim, to special pieces sourced on my travels – and the cross necklace lovingly handed down to me – my jewellery box is a treasure trove in its own right.
What I love most about these objects is their transformative power – how they can elevate even the simplest outfit into something entirely new. When we think about our sartorial agenda, our minds instinctively turn to clothing. Yet we often overlook the quiet power of accessories, and why they are, perhaps, the most worthwhile investment of all.
When it comes to shopping for jewellery, I almost always gravitate towards vintage. Maybe it’s the faint scuff on a well-loved bangle or the softly muted glow of aged gold, but there’s something undeniably special about discovering a piece that has lived an entire life before finding its way into your palm.
There’s a reason so many jewels become heirlooms, passed down through generations with stories woven into them. There’s an even greater satisfaction when someone asks where your sparkling piece is from, and you can reply, “It’s pre-loved.” And, dare I say it, the craftsmanship and quality are often far superior to much of what’s made today.
London is awash with exquisite boutiques overflowing with archival treasures. Be it layers of Chanel pearls from past runways or the gleaming violet jewels of a Dior Maasai bracelet, there’s no shortage of precious pieces waiting to find a new home. From Lovers Lane Vintage and Nordic Poetry, to The Hirst Collection and Knightsbridge Rocks, I’ve curated a list of my favourite boutiques, visiting each one personally to slip on a selection of their most covetable hidden gems. After all, what could be more delightful than frosting ourselves in jewels? Diamonds, as they say, are a girl’s best friend.
