The Duchess of Edinburgh is no stranger to a chic coat and knee-high boot pairing, but earlier this week, she switched up her winter wardrobe entirely as she headed overseas. The 61-year-old wife of Prince Edward made an appearance in Méribel, France, as patron of the UK Armed Forces Winter Sports Association to watch the ISSC (Independent Ski Schools) championship before attending a reception to celebrate their 75th anniversary.
Dressed for the weather, Duchess Sophie was seen sporting a gorgeous black padded coat featuring a faux fur-lined collar. Padded puffer coats are the best designs for skiing as they trap body heat, thus providing superior protection against Méribel's current sub-zero temperatures.
She added extra warmth with a thermal high-neck top and, on the bottom half, rocked black salopettes. Rather fittingly, the royal topped off her look with a purple ISCC beanie hat.
Sophie attended the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2003
The royal is a total pro on the slopes, as she has proved during ski-covered engagements with her husband. All the way back in 2003, Sophie joined Edward at The Alpine World Ski Championships in St Moritz, where the then-Countess of Wessex was the ultimate It-girl in a chocolate brown puffer coat and leopard print scarf.

The Duchess of Edinburgh speaks to guests during a reception at St James's Palace on February 3, 2026
Her ski wardrobe is a far cry from the look Sophie wore on her last engagement before jetting off to France last week. On 3 February, the duchess attended a reception at St James' Palace to recognise the work of employees of local and regional governments, alongside her brother-in-law King Charles and his wife Queen Camilla.
The royal opted for a £3,000 chocolate-hued maxi dress from Armani, which was made from silk and featured a round neckline. Oriona Robb, luxury stylist with over 20 years of experience in the fashion industry, told HELLO! that Sophie "radiates a refined confidence through her choice of a softly reflective, silky gown in a subtle taupe-mink hue".
Oriona added: "The gown’s long sleeves and gently gathered neckline create a fluid, elongating line, maintaining an air of regal poise while allowing movement and ease. The muted sheen of the fabric conveys sophistication without showiness, signalling a modern approach to formal dressing."
