Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and if you're anything like me, then you know there's nothing better than curling up with a bowl of popcorn for a cheesy romcom.

Prime Video has just dropped Relationship Goals, which is based on the book Relationship Goals: How to Win at Dating, Marriage, and Sex by Pastor Michael Todd. The book was first released in 2020, and it currently boasts 4.7 out of five stars from over 21,000 Amazon reviews.

The film's synopsis reads: "When brilliant TV producer Leah Caldwell (Kelly Rowland) is about to make history as the first woman to run New York's top morning show, her ex Jarrett Roy (Clifford "Method Man" Smith) swoops in to compete for the same position. He claims he's a changed man, transformed by the wisdom of the New York Times bestselling book 'Relationship Goals.'

"As her tight-knit circle of friends dive into the same life-changing book, they all begin to rediscover their aim in love. Yet Leah, laser-focused on breaking through the glass ceiling, isn't ready to believe in finding love—even as her undeniable chemistry with her ex threatens to reignite old flames."

However, the film, which stars Kelly Rowland and Method Man, has left fans divided, with some calling it "basic" while others praised the flick as "light and entertaining".

Reviews

The response from fans has been incredibly mixed since the film landed on Wednesday, although it has shot to the top of Prime's charts in the United States.

One called the movie "basic" as they said: "Relationship Goals is a light and easy-to-watch flick, but it lacks real depth. The storyline is quite simplistic and relies heavily on familiar tropes, which makes it feel predictable and already seen. While it can be entertaining for casual viewing, it doesn't leave a lasting impression or offer much emotional complexity."

Plenty of viewers criticised the romcom

A second added: "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed in that Relationship Goals movie on Prime," while a third posted: "So the movie Relationship Goals on Prime was not good but the actors were great."

However, in more positive reviews, one watcher enthused: "Relationship goals on Prime Video is actually good. Very new with Kelly Rowland & Method Man," while another commented: "I already love my sis @KELLYROWLAND and this Relationship Goals movie on Prime was too cute!! We need more like this!!!"

Some fans found the film entertaining

In a three-star review for The Guardian, Andrew Lawrence penned: "Relationship Goals is no less parochial a take on marriage, presented yet again as a woman's only path to true and lasting peace in life. If you can turn a blind eye to that message and focus on the familiar funny faces instead, the tractor-beam ride to the credits is heavenly enough."

Who stars in Relationship Goals?

The film is led by Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland, who has also starred in Think Like a Man and The Curse of Bridge Hollow, and she's joined by fellow musician, Method Man, who has credits in Power Book II: Ghost and Trainwreck.
