Loose Women's Janet Street-Porter, 79, has shared details of her fifth marriage to her partner of 26 years, Peter Spanton. In her first appearance back on the ITV daytime show, the broadcaster and journalist told her fellow panellists about the happy day, which took place in Great Yarmouth in Norfolk.
The news of Janet's marriage was revealed on Loose Women last week, where the panellist shared a home video alongside her new husband and their dog, Badger. "It's my big news to everybody watching – Peter and me, and Badger, got married on Saturday. So, there you are, I finally did it. Waited 'til the last for the best."
Janet Street-Porter shares details of her wedding
Reflecting on the happy day, Janet told her fellow panellists Christine Lampard, Coleen Nolan and Oti Mabuse why she decided to get married for a fifth time.
"I didn't tell anybody at all. Peter and I have talked about it a lot. I mean, we've been together for like, 26 years. We've been through so much.
"Then I'd always thought, you know, it's embarrassing. Frankly, I've been married four times before. The last one was particularly a big mistake on my part. That was, you know, when I was 50, and I guess I thought it's embarrassing. I don't know how I'm gonna handle it. I'm still embarrassed."
A small ceremony
Despite her initial reservations, Janet continued that after discussing it over Christmas, she and Peter decided the time was right. Speaking to the registrar, Janet said she wanted the wedding to be kept secret and asked a few close friends, including two former neighbours who live in Norfolk, to witness the ceremony.
"There were six of us, so we stayed in a pub in Norfolk that I'd been to before. And when we got to the registry office, there was no one there in the car park. It was brilliant. It was empty. We went in and there was this great big room with chairs for like 100 people, and then it was all over in 10 minutes."
Janet's nerves ahead of the big day
Admitting she was nervous ahead of the big day, Janet candidly shared the reasons for her anxiety around tying the knot. "I got myself in a complete state the day before," she said. "I think because I'd messed up the last one. That was a really, really bad mistake. It was bad for my friends. It was bad for me. I don't know about him, but it was a horrible, horrible, stupid mistake, and I didn't want to do that again.
"I didn't want to do anything embarrassing that I would regret. I didn't want to make fun of Peter. I wanted it to be lovely for him, because he hasn't been married before."
Prior to meeting Peter, Janet had been married four times: her first husband, Tim Street-Porter, her second, Time Out editor Tony Elliott, her third, Canadian film-maker Frank Cvitanovich and her fourth, salesman David Sorkin.
