The BBC has unveiled a first-look clip at its upcoming romantic crime drama, Mint, which follows the daughter of a powerful crime family who falls in love with a member of a rival clan.

The upcoming eight-part series, which arrives on BBC One and iPlayer in spring, is billed as a story of "soaring romance, crushing heartbreak, love, infatuation, darkness and tragedy". Sign me up!

The series boasts an impressive cast, led by Emma Laird (The Brutalist, Mayor of Kingstown) and acting newcomer Ben Coyle-Larner (better known as musician Loyle Carner), alongside Lewis Gribben (Shetland), Laura Fraser (Breaking Bad) and more.

As a huge fan of both the romance and crime drama genres, I've got high hopes for Mint. The series is penned by acclaimed writer and director Charlotte Regan and comes from Fearless Minds (The Critic) and House Productions, known for producing compelling dramas such as Sherwood and the Oscar-winning film, Conclave.

What is Mint about?

The story follows Shannon, the daughter of her area's dominant crime family, who experiences the joy of first love when she falls head over heels for Arran, a member of a rival crime gang who is new to the town. Elsewhere, Shannon's home life is imploding as her father, Dylan, steps down as the family head for mysterious reasons. The synopsis continues: "Sam, Dylan's second in command, steps up to take over, though his diverging tactics start to raise alarm.

"In the wake of Dylan's decision, instead of focusing on the crime world or the politics of succession, we’re swept into the distinct emotional worlds of Shannon's family – her parents, Dylan and Cat, her older brother Luke and her indomitable grandma Ollie."

Who stars in Mint?

Emma Laird and Ben Coyle-Larner lead the cast as Shannon and Arran. They are joined by an impressive ensemble cast, including Sam Riley (Firebrand, Control), Laura Fraser (Breaking Bad, Patience), Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy, Shetland) and Lindsay Duncan (Truelove, Sherwood).
