Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman shocked Strictly viewers last year when the presenters confirmed that they would be stepping away from the popular BBC programme.

Tess hasn't made many appearances since stepping away from the show, but on Wednesday, she joined her husband, Vernon Kay, as a presenter on The One Show, marking the first time they'd hosted the same show in nearly 20 years.

The presenter even mentioned her previous show when she asked Jessie Buckley and Maggie Gyllenhaal about the dancing and choreography they had to learn for her upcoming film, The Bride.

Confirming the news, the social media account for The One Show posted: "Hosting together for the first time in nearly 20 years, Vernon Kay & Tess Daly are joined by… Jessie Buckley, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Bridgerton's Luke Thompson & Yerin Ha."

Opening the show, Vernon introduced his wife of 22 years as "TV royalty" and joked that she would keep him "in check".

However, several viewers were surprised to see Tess on a show other than Strictly. One said: "What a lovely surprise! Great to see Tess again," and alongside a set of sad emojis, a second added: "Tess Daly on The One Show."

A third enthused: "Seeing Tess Daly on a TV show other than Strictly feels very weird. We'll have to get used to this now she's left."

Departing Strictly

Tess and Claudia confirmed they were leaving Strictly last October. In a joint statement on Instagram, they explained: "We have loved working as a duo and hosting Strictly has been an absolute dream.

"We were always going to leave together and now feels like the right time. We will have the greatest rest of this amazing series and we just want to say an enormous thank you to the BBC and to every single person who works on the show.

"They're the most brilliant team and we'll miss them every day. We will cry when we say the last 'keep dancing' but we will continue to say it to each other. Just possibly in tracksuit bottoms at home while holding some pizza."

Their final Glitterball couple was footballer Karen Carney and Carlos Gu, and during the final, a message was read out to Tess and Claudia from Queen Camilla.

Read out by Craig Revel Horwood, who has also been on the show since it first aired in 2004, the message read: "Dear Tess and Claudia, as you prepare to take your final twirl, I just wanted to say thank you on behalf of the millions who watch you each week. I have often thought that Strictly is not so much a show about dancing as about friendships: the bonds forged, the struggles overcome and the joy shared in undertaking a joint endeavour.

"If that is true, then perhaps yours has been the greatest Strictly partnership of all. The warmth, compassion and sheer happiness you have radiated with and from each other has been at the heart of the show's success. I think I speak for everyone when I say you have been utterly fab-u-lous."

Camilla's message concluded: "I wish you both every success in wherever life’s journey takes you next. But as one who has appreciated its lifelong benefits, do promise us one thing: Keeeeeeeep dancing! With warmest gratitude and admiration, Camilla R."

The pair were visibly moved, with gasps when they heard that it was Camilla who sent the message.
