BBC fans are counting down the days until the highly anticipated return of Doctor Foster, starring Suranne Jones as the iconic, vengeful GP Gemma Foster.
After the BBC announced the exciting news that a third and final series is in the works back in February, viewers have been eagerly awaiting more details, including who will star in the new season and when they can expect a release date.
On Tuesday, Suranne Jones shared a behind-the-scenes first look at the main cast at a read-through – and it's safe to say we can't wait to see what the next instalment has in store.
The 47-year-old actress took to Instagram to share a snap of herself with Bertie Carvel and Tom Taylor, who play Simon and Tom, her on-screen husband and son. "Just your average family trying to work through some [explicit]…. Nothing to see here! #drfoster #thefosters #10yearson #series3 Series 1 and 2 on @bbciplayer," she penned.
Meanwhile, the BBC posted a photo from the same read-through with a filming update: "Ten years on and drama is still following Doctor Foster... Suranne Jones, Bertie Carvel and Tom Taylor are back – reunited at a readthrough for #DoctorFoster series three, which starts filming this spring. Watch series one and two on iPlayer now. #SuranneJones #BertieCarvel #TomTaylor."
With filming due to begin in spring, viewers can hopefully expect the new chapter to land in late 2026 or early 2027.
Fans react to the first look
Fans were quick to take to the comments to share their excitement, with many asking when they can expect to see the new series.
"Lost count how many times I've watched this! Can't wait to see where this series takes us," penned one person, while another said: "I'm crying at work lol I missed my chaotic family so much."
A third added: "Genuinely cannot wait for the new series!" while a fourth said: "Just rewatched series one and two, hurry up, can't wait!"
What to expect from Doctor Foster season 3
The series will pick up ten years after Gemma discovered her husband, Simon, was having an affair with a 23-year-old student, Kate Parks (Jodie Comer). After enacting a "masterful" revenge, Gemma and Simon's 15-year-old son, Tom, went missing.
The synopsis reads: "Now, in series three, Gemma is still a GP, still in the same house, but on the brink of a fresh start: she has met someone new and is getting married. But as the wedding day draws closer, and friends and family gather, shadows from the past begin to re-emerge threatening both her happiness and her reputation.
"As Gemma fights to protect those she loves and expose whoever's intent on hurting her, will she be able to put the past to bed, dispense justice, and claim the future she deserves, before it is too late?"
What have the cast and creatives said?
Speaking about the new series, Suranne said that when she got the call, she knew the time was right.
"We needed space from the first two series, and we needed Tom - Gemma and Simon's runaway son - to return as an adult with questions," she said. "For me, this time around it's about accountability and questioning: 'Can we ever truly sever ties with our past and the damage or traumas that haunt us, so we can fully move forward?'
"Gemma and Simon have so much to unpick! It's been an exciting time working with the brilliant Mike Bartlett again, and the team at Drama Republic, on the scripts and now I can't wait to start filming."
Meanwhile, writer, creator and executive producer Mike Bartlett added: "I always hoped that we'd get to tell the final part of Gemma's story – which is about a woman seeking justice in an unfair world. That feels as relevant now as when Gemma first found a blonde hair on the scarf.
"It's been a joy to team up once again with the hugely talented Drama Republic, the now very grown-up and brilliant Tom Taylor, the inimitable Bertie Carvel and of course, the incomparable Suranne Jones, to tell the final chapter of this story and revisit Parminster – where it turns out there's still secrets, betrayals, vengeance and perhaps one last dinner party…"
Seasons one and two of Doctor Foster are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
