Starring Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who, The Thick of It) and Cush Jumbo (The Good Fight, Vera), Criminal Record first landed in 2024 and follows two London-based detectives: June Lenker, a young officer in the early stages of her career, and Daniel Hegarty, a well-connected senior figure determined to protect his legacy. Together, they are drawn into a tense tug-of-war over a high-profile murder case.

While it remains one of the lesser-known crime series on TV, the first season was a hit with critics, earning a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. With a second season on the way, it's set to fill the gap for viewers once The Capture wraps on the BBC on Sunday 12 April. Keep reading for everything you need to know about Criminal Record season two.

What happens in the new trailer?

The clip opens with an aerial shot of London, returning viewers to the capital city for another twisty new case. This time, the detectives are tasked with tracking down a far-right gang trafficking weapons, led by Cosmo Thompson, who ominously warns: "The police are coming for me." But the case deepens when Daniel reveals: "They're planning something else."

As the tension rises and Cosmo goads the detectives, June asks: "What if there's a bomb?" Daniel answers: "This is intelligence, what we do here is put out the fires before they start. You want to catch this man? This is the only game in town."

With flashes of the two detectives growing increasingly frustrated in their investigation, Daniel says: "No one remembers the saves, it's the ones you miss," before the clip ends with an epic explosion.

Criminal Record Rotten Tomatoes score

The first season proved a hit with critics, earning a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In its four-star review, The Independent penned: "[Peter Capaldi's character is] a very modern adversary and the perfect match for Jumbo in this searing two-hander. Don't let the plodding title put you off: Criminal Record is anything but your average police drama by numbers."

Meanwhile, Variety said: "Rutman and co-directors Jim Loach and Shaun James Grant never drop the ball. Here, all the intricate pieces of the puzzle link and connect in shocking, unexpected ways."

The Guardian added: "Alone, Jumbo or Capaldi can hold anyone's attention. Together, squaring off as adversaries, they are mesmerising. If ever there is going to be an award invented for best joint performance, make it this year, for them."
