It was 10 years ago in 2016 that Shadowhunters premiered on Freeform, introducing audiences to Clary Fray (Kat McNamara) and the world of demon-hunting, vampires, and werewolves. Harry Shum Jr. starred as the warlock Magnus Bane, and his character's arc over the three seasons saw him become a fan favorite thanks to his forbidden relationship with Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario).
The show concluded in 2019, but Harry and Matthew recently reunited to hang out as if "no time had passed".
"I just saw Matt a week ago; I love that guy. We talk about the dumbest things," Harry told HELLO!
"I think that's what made filming the show so fun; it was important for us to do the good work, but to have conversations off-screen was a joy. You're talking with an old friend, and we pick up where we left off."
Harry, 44, who now stars in Greys Anatomy on ABC, is married to actress Shelby Rabara, and they welcomed their daughter, Xia, in March 2019. Matthew, 38, is married to fashion designer Esther Kim, and they are parents to two children, a daughter born in 2020, and their second child born in 2024.
"I'm very proud to be known for [Magnus], and to have been part of something as important for these fans because at the end of the day, that show was for the fans and it meant a lot to them," Harry continued.
"I'm still going and meeting so many people for whom this show changed the texture of how they approach life, how they meet friends. It is just such a beautiful thing."
Magnus, a centuries-old warlock, and Alec, an honorable, young Shadowhunter, are one of the most celebrated couples in fantasy literature, and their casting caused discourse from the get-go.
But Harry and Matthew were both praised for the care and sensitivity they put into their work, as viewers watched Alec come to terms with his sexuality, Magnus learn to trust the Shadowhunters, and their partnership breaking down not just their own prejudices but deep-seated cultural differences between the Shadowhunters and Downworlders.
Harry also enjoyed a reunion with Kat on May 31, as the pair both attended the MPTF Next Gen Summer Party at The Aster in Los Angeles. Harry was joined by his wife, Shelby, and the two were seen catching up with Kat, who later shared a selfie of the three.
"It is important to be part of a community that takes care of each other," Harry said of attending the annual event.
"One thing that doesn't change is you need community, and that is the biggest thing: have your tribe, have your people, find your community, and get to know different people. Then you'll really figure out who your people are and hopefully you can make magic together."
