While Pink and Carey Hart's daughter Willow Sage Hart is now a prominent figure at her shows, that wasn't always the case.
The 14-year-old is currently a Broadway and musical theater hopeful who has performed her duet with her mom, 46, "Cover Me in Sunshine," on stage several times now.
That journey began exactly five years ago, when their collaboration was released, marking Willow's first foray into the spotlight, a metaphorical light of sorts for her and the family in the midst of the Covid-19 induced lockdowns.
In a video shared on her Instagram page, Pink spoke with crowds at Hyde Park during her concert about the process of writing and recording the song in late 2020 and early 2021, just a few months after she and her son Jameson were diagnosed with Covid-19.
"This song fell into my lap, I did not write it because I don't like to get in the way of a good song," she told the audience. "And it fell in my lap at a time where I was not sure what was going to happen in the world, and if we were ever actually going to be okay."
While she joked that she always thinks "the world is ending," that was a particularly trying time for them all. "And this song came along."
"I was recording it, and my little one ran into the room and liked it, and decided to sing on it…and it's called 'Cover Me in Sunshine'," she concluded. In the caption alongside her video, the "Trustfall" hitmaker further elaborated on her mental state at the time.
"Willow was 9 when we recorded this at home during lockdown," she penned. "The song made us so happy. So we put it out, hoping it would make you happy too."
"It felt like a warm, safe hug, or like finding that one bit of light when everything felt so dark. That's what music does for me. Watching all of your faces every night while Willow made her way to the stage to sing with me is a memory you all helped me build that I will never ever forget. Thank you for sharing five years of sunshine with us."
The song was released on February 12, 2021 and immediately received positive reviews. The track was released as part of her second live album, All I Know So Far: Setlist. While it failed to chart in the US, it hit the top 10 in several countries in Europe, and has become a favorite in concert.
In 2024, at an EMBRF event, Pink gave further insight into the process of recording the track with Willow. "During the pandemic, I taught myself to do GarageBand which for me, is a really big deal, so please be impressed," she shared.
"And I was doing what I think is a phenomenal take, and in ran my daughter. She's like, 'What are you doing?' I was like, 'I'm hitting space bars, making magic happen.' And that was a really good take." At that point, Willow told her mom that she liked the song and expressed an interest in featuring on it too.
"So she did one take, and then she went swimming," the proud mom revealed. "I was like, 'Do you want to do one more, just for safety? That's what people do.' She's like, 'No, bye'," joking that since then, she's nicknamed her daughter "One Take Willow."
