Jamie Lee Curtis has a packed schedule, between her 2025 releases Freakier Friday and Ella McCay, and her hints about the next season of The Bear in 2026, but she has previously considered branching out her career interests beyond acting.
When she's not filming, Jamie, 67, is a doting mother to two children, Annie and Ruby, whom she adopted with her husband, Christopher Guest, in 1986 and 1996, respectively. While they're both now adults, their childhood inspired the actress to try her hand at inventing in a bid to make her and other parents' lives easier.
Jamie's invention
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2018, she revealed her struggles to change her daughter's diaper and reach the baby wipes sparked an idea to create a simpler solution. "In that moment, I said, 'Aha, I have to invent a diaper that has a wiper built into the diaper.' And I invented Dipe and Wipe, and I patented it."
According to the 1987 patent, which appeared to have expired in 2007, it was a "disposable infant garment which takes the form of a diaper including, on its outer side, a sealed, but openable, moisture-proof pocket which contains one or more clean-up wipers."
However, Jamie expressed concerns that the idea hadn't been refined to be environmentally friendly, adding: "At the time, it felt a little landfill-y."
Despite her brief interest in the invention, she quickly returned to acting, with her Ella McCay co-star Emma Mackey telling Best Quality Designer Handbag and other reporters that "she loves her job" and "makes you feel very at ease and supported when you need it."
Grown-up kids
Jamie Lee and Christopher adopted their daughter, Annie, in December 1986, but the star revealed she found juggling work and motherhood difficult. In an interview with the New York Times, she recalled the emotional toll that spending time away from home filming 1988's A Fish Called Wanda took on her.
"I'm a mom of two daughters. Motherhood is hard, particularly motherhood and show business," she said. "It was a struggle for me from when Annie was a baby, and I was making A Fish Called Wanda.
"There wasn't a day I didn't cry in the car, leaving a 6-month-old at home. This is a fun, exciting, creative life, but I have struggled."
Annie, who married her husband Jason Wolf in her parents' backyard in 2019, pursued a career as a dance instructor and choreographer, working at MNR Dance Factory. She largely avoids the spotlight.
Meanwhile, her younger sibling is nine years her junior. Ruby is a video editor for a gaming personality on YouTube, and has been vocal about her parents' support after coming out as transgender in 2021.
"My mom has supported me all the way ever since I came out as trans," Ruby gushed on X. "I love her so much. There are allies everywhere for the trans community. You just need to look for them. And we will stand by your side for the long run."
After winning Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars in 2021, the Everything Everywhere All at Once star emotionally discussed her daughter as she called for more gender parity. "Inclusivity then invokes the bigger questions of, 'How do you include everyone when there are binary choices?' It's difficult, and as the mother of a trans daughter, I understand that," she said.
"But [also] to degender the category I am concerned will diminish the opportunities for more women,5 which is what I am working towards, and it is a complicated question," she said, acknowledging the ongoing debate over whether the Academy should eliminate gendered acting categories. I want inclusivity and more women, just [expletive] more women anywhere anytime all at once."
