Loose Women star Coleen Nolan revealed why she urges young up-and-coming stars to develop a "thick skin" as she publicly navigates her tumultuous relationship with her son's ex-partner.
The 61-year-old singer and former member of Blackpool group, The Nolans, walked the red carpet at the Royal Television Society awards on Tuesday, 25 March at London's JW Marriott Grosvenor House.
She was joined by her colleagues, Brenda Edwards and Kéllé Bryan, at the prestigious evening, which celebrates the UK television industry, and stopped to chat with HELLO! who were at the event.
The mother-of-three has been criticised in the press recently by her 37-year-old son Shane's ex-girlfriend and mother of his daughter, Emma Kivell, who branded her a "bully", claiming she called her names, which contributed to her having a breakdown.
At the awards, where Loose Women was nominated for the Daytime Programme gong, Coleen shared her words of wisdom for anyone experiencing life in the spotlight for the first time.
She exclusively told us: "I would say, don't take everything personally because it can be hard. There's so much joy in the industry, but it's always hard, and you get judged by everyone, and you have to get a thick skin for that.
"As long as you've surrounded yourself with the people that truly love you, friends, your close family, you can't go wrong!"
Kéllé echoed Coleen's sentiments and offered her own advice on how best to deal with public scrutiny as a result of fame. She said: "Enjoy the moments, enjoy the ride.
"When you're on a high, don't go too high. Don't forget about the people that are around you, don't forget about the runners and the people that are not seemingly on the level that you feel like they are. Treat everyone exactly the same.
"Be grateful, be humble. Stay the person that you are and enjoy it. You never know how long it's going to last!"
Coleen's relationship with her son
The daytime TV panellist welcomed her oldest son, Shane Jnr, with her ex-husband and EastEnders star Shane Richie in the late 1980s.
Following in his mother's footsteps, Shane is a singer and has performed as a warm-up act for The Nolans during their arena tour in 2009.
He also fronts his own band, which is named after his mum's former group, The Nolan Band. Other members include drummer Matt Bamber, guitarist Jack Lavelle and bass guitarist Dave Benkel.
Coleen's son has also dabbled in musical theatre, appearing in Boogie Nights and touring with David Hasselhoff for Last Night A DJ Saved My Life.
Before his marriage to his ex-wife, Maddie Wahdan, Shane met Emma in 2015 and welcomed a little girl, Amelia-Rose, a year later. Despite their relationship ending, Shane reportedly promised to support Emma and co-parent with her.
