Prince Archie is taking after his father on the ski slopes – and learning a whole range of vital life skills in the process.

A seasoned skier, Prince Harry has been hitting the slopes since the age of six. He first tried the winter sport in Austria with his mother, the late Princess Diana, in 1991, almost 35 years ago to the day.

So it came as little surprise to see that the Duke of Sussex has encouraged his six-year-old son Archie to learn his favourite hobby – and that he's rather good at it.

A video captured by his mother, Meghan Markle, which you can watch above, showcased how deftly Archie had taken to the sport, snowploughing down the mountain and perfectly keeping pace with his father.

As well as helping physical fitness and the development of coordination and balance, skiing can play a vital role in child development, offering a myriad of skills that will benefit them later in life.

We turned to the experts at Ecole de Ski Francais (ESI) to offer further insight into how learning to ski might benefit a child as young as Archie.

Vital skills for later life

First of all, skiing teaches young kids "self-confidence" – both on and off the pistes. The experts explain: "Learning to ski also means learning to overcome fears and face challenges head-on. The confidence gained on the slopes often translates into better self-esteem in other areas of life."

Skiing also teaches children values like "independence and responsibility". Needing to make quick decisions and following safety rules at a young age makes children more independent in all areas of life.

The social aspect of skiing lessons should not be underestimated. Teamwork and making new friends are key components of getting to grips with the sport for youngsters.

Finally – and a key point Harry's family knows all about – skiing helps foster an appreciation for nature and the environment. "This connection with nature is valuable and can encourage them to adopt environmentally responsible behaviours," ESI explain.

Fun-filled family break

The Sussexes are back from their snowy getaway, where they were also joined by daughter Princess Lilibet, four.

While Harry's father King Charles led senior royals, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, Princess Anne and Prince Edward, at the Easter Matins church service in Windsor, it was a more low-key family affair over in Montecito for team Sussex.

Meghan shared a video of their Easter egg hunt, featuring an adorable red-haired Lilibet rocking bunny ears as she raced around their magical garden alongside big brother Archie.

Overlayed with the simple message, "Happy Easter!", the moment captured a carefree, relaxed scene that felt worlds away from royal formality.
