Tippi Hedren was one of the most notable actresses of the 1960s thanks to her starring roles in some of Alfred Hitchcock's biggest hits, The Birds and Marnie.

The films helped the star, now aged 96, break into the industry after previously only appearing in an uncredited role in The Petty Girl, which was released 13 years before The Birds. However, she was initially held back in auditioning following the fallout of her relationship with the director, with her stating that he abused her, and him threatening to wreck her career.

The actress subsequently followed up her breakout roles with the likes of A Countess from Hong Kong, Tiger by the Tail and Roar.

She continued acting until 2017, when she was aged 89, with her final credit being in The Ghost and the Whale.

Away from her life on screen, Tippi is known as an animal conservationist, famously having pet lions and tigers, but she is also the mother and grandmother of two Hollywood legends. Here's all you need to know…

Tippi's only child is a famous actress

Famous daughter Melanie Griffith

Tippi welcomed Melanie with her first husband, Peter Griffith, with future Hollywood star being born six years after the couple married. Like her famous mother, Melanie entered the world of showbusiness, making her debut as an uncredited extra in 1969's Smith!.

The star quickly made a name for herself when she appeared in the likes of Night Moves and Body Double, the latter of which earned her Best Actress at the National Society of Film Critics Awards. However, despite several incredible roles, the actress has also had some lows, earning Razzie nominations for the likes of Crazy in Alabama, Cecil B. Demented and Shining Through, winning Worst Actress for the latter.

Melanie has been married four times, including twice to actor Don Johnson. Her other famous husbands included Steven Bauer and Antonio Banderas.

Tippi famously lost acting work due to clashing with Alfred Hitchcock over his treatment of her. Reminiscing about the lessons Melanie had learnt from her mother, Melanie once told The Hollywood Reporter: "She became an example of what to never let happen in my life. Hopefully, I've passed that on to Dakota [Johnson]."

Dakota is a major Hollywood star

Granddaughter Dakota Johnson

Dakota is the daughter of Melanie and Don, and like her parents and grandmother, the star decided to pursue a career in film. Dakota is best known for her role as Ana Steele in the Fifty Shades of Grey series, in which she appeared opposite Jamie Dornan.

However, the star actually made her debut in 1999, when she appeared alongside Melanie in Crazy in Alabama. Dakota has since appeared in the likes of The Social Network, Black Mass, Bad Times at the El Royale, The Lost Daughter and Madame Web.

In the same interview as Melanie about their A-list relative, Dakota said: "I was taught self-respect and grace and strength. Never before this moment did anyone in my family [explicitly] say, like, 'Be careful. Sometimes, powerful men in Hollywood will try to do whatever.'"

Tippi's husband

Tippi has been married three times. Her first marriage was to Peter Griffith, who she welcomed Melanie with. Tippi and Peter married one day after she turned 18, but they ended up splitting three years after their daughter was born.

In 1964, she married Noel Marshall, who was her agent, but their marriage ended acrimoniously in 1982, with Tippi taking out a restraining order against Noel, preventing him from coming within 20 feet of her.

Her third and final marriage was to Luis Barrenechea, a steel manufacturer, with their union lasting for seven years. Tippi later said that although Luis was "everything" she wanted in a man, she couldn't bear with him being an "alcoholic".
