King Charles has put up his disgraced brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, on his privately owned estate, Sandringham, after he was ousted from his previous home, Royal Lodge.

Marsh Farm, where the former Prince Andrew moved into on Easter Monday, is located 1.5 miles away from the main Sandringham House. You may think that this distance could be symbolic of Charles wanting to remove Andrew from the royal fold; however, there are other factors at play as to why Andrew has been located so far away from the main residence.

The Sandringham estate stretches over 20,000 acres, and there are multiple properties on this estate. The closest to Sandringham House is Gardens House, which is a holiday home listed on Airbnb that King Charles leases out to members of the public throughout the year. It is also where Prince Edward and his wife Duchess Sophie stayed this Easter.

There are many reasons why this building wouldn’t have been a suitable option. Firstly, that’s because it is already leased out, and this is a very lucrative business deal for Charles, who can get up to £3,000 for a three-night stay. The proximity to the main house also means that it's much closer to tourists and to the hub of Sandringham life with its café and shop, so Andrew wouldn't be afforded any privacy.

It's clear that privacy has been a big issue for the disgraced royal, as we've seen many security and privacy measures added to Marsh Farm ahead of his arrival. A case in point is the six-foot fence erected around the perimeter with a large gate to stop the press and members of the public from viewing his home easily from the road.

The next closest property to Sandringham House is York House, and with its own stables and outbuildings, it could have been a desirable place for Andrew, but again, the distance to the house could have raised an issue. The Folly is another Sandringham residence, but similarly to Gardens House, the team rent it out to holidaymakers for a considerable fee.

Park House sits within the Sandringham estate, and it is where Princess Diana was raised. It had a second lease of life as a charity hotel fully adapted for disabilities, but reports suggest it is now in disrepair, so it would be uninhabitable. Other residences are Anmer Hall, which is already used as Prince William and Princess Kate’s country home, and Wood Farm, which is where Andrew was first holed up before his move into Marsh Farm.

Marsh Farm renovations

In the days and weeks leading up to Andrew's move into Marsh Farm, the place was a hive of activity with tradespeople working tirelessly. There has been a focus on replicating the high-end finishes of his previous residence. Notably, the prestigious family-run carpet company Linney Cooper, which holds a Royal Warrant and is known for its work at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, have been seen on-site.

Beyond interior aesthetics, significant work has been undertaken to transform the once-unoccupied farmhouse into a secure and private residence. As previously mentioned, features like the six-foot perimeter fence, an extensive CCTV system, and security lights have all been installed.
