Earlier this week, a statement from Buckingham Palace read that King Charles would "stand ready to support" a police investigation into allegations against his brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

The release continued that His Majesty had expressed his "profound concern" over the new revelations about the former Duke of York, which emerged from the Epstein files.

Wednesday saw a fresh update on the investigation, with Thames Valley Police sharing that they have held discussions with specialist prosecutors from the Crown Prosecution Service about allegations that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor shared confidential reports from his role as the UK's trade envoy with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The force said it "is making progress as quickly as possible," following the latest allegations, continuing: "We will provide updates as and when they are available, but at this stage it would be inappropriate to discuss further specifics of this work".

Support from the royals

This latest update came after Buckingham Palace's spokesperson said: "The King has made clear, in words and through unprecedented actions, his profound concern at allegations which continue to come to light in respect of Mr Mountbatten-Windsor’s conduct.

"While the specific claims in question are for Mr Mountbatten-Windsor to address, if we are approached by Thames Valley Police we stand ready to support them as you would expect. As was previously stated, Their Majesties’ thoughts and sympathies have been, and remain with, the victims of any and all forms of abuse."

This echoes the statement issued by Prince William, who is the nephew of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who addressed the ongoing investigation on Monday.

Prince William and Catherine were described as being "deeply concerned" by the ongoing revelations. In a statement, a spokesman for the royal couple said: "I can confirm The Prince and Princess have been deeply concerned by the continuing revelations. Their thoughts remain focused on the victims."

HELLO!'s Royal Editor Emily Nash has previously noted that His Majesty and Prince William are "learning about these allegations in real time, so it's a developing situation".

On the demand for the royals to apologise, Emily Nash adds: "There have also been calls for the King and William to apologise on behalf of the royal family for Andrew's behaviour. Surely the person who needs to apologise and take responsibility for this whole situation is Andrew himself."
