The Princess Royal is often commended as the hardest-working royal, but her penchant for a sartorial statement doesn't go unnoticed either.

Stepping out at the American Geophysical Union Ocean Sciences Meeting earlier this week, Anne, 75, surprised royal watchers with her winter ensemble, given it was the hottest day of the year in London at the time. But nevertheless, the royal, who was in Glasgow, looked wonderful wearing a deep red coat and a navy blue velvet scarf.

Confusion aside, the look certainly went down a treat with fans, who couldn't wait to share their thoughts on Anne's winter look when the official social media channels for the British Royal Family shared a slew of photos from the event.

"That is a glorious shade of red, and the velvet scarf is lovely," the comment received 12 likes. Meanwhile, another echoed the same sentiments, describing the scarf as "lovely" on the Princess Royal.

Other fans couldn't help but point out just how much she looks like her mother, the late Queen Elizabeth, in the photographs. "Look…she has the Queen's teeth, same smile. We miss the Queen, and she echoes her."

Another added: "Oh wow, in [photo three] she looks so much like her mom."

Quiet celebrations

The comments came ahead of what is expected to be a quiet weekend for Princess Anne, who will be marking her husband Sir Timothy Laurence's 71st birthday.

The couple, who married Princess Anne in 1992, are expected to enjoy low-key celebrations amid the ongoing family drama with Anne's brother, the former Prince, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

Anne and Sir Tim's nuptials came after the royal's first marriage to Captain Mark Phillips, with whom Anne shares her children, Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips.

The couple live on their Gatcombe Park home situated on the 700-acre countryside estate in Gloucestershire. Anne and Tim have lived there since Queen Elizabeth II gifted the royal residence to her in the 1970s.

Zara also lives at the estate with her husband Mike Tindall and their three children, Lena, Mia and Lucas.
