As Queen Mary of Denmark, 54, and her family stepped out for the annual Royal Run in Copenhagen, Her Majesty was quizzed over the health of her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe. She gave an update on her condition after she was hospitalised for a second time following the discovery of a blood clot.
Speaking to Danish TV channel TV2, Mary said: "I heard she had a surgery for a procedure after a previous fall. Everything went well and as planned. She is in the best hands."
She later added: "Of course it puts a damper on the day, but she won’t like me saying this."
Queen Mary's husband, King Frederik, 57, also spoke on the day to explain that he had plans to visit his 86-year-old mother in hospital on Tuesday.
On May 14, Mary was admitted to Rigshospitalet after suffering from angina and underwent an angioplasty in a coronary artery. She was discharged six days later. Now, less than a week after that discharge, she has been readmitted following the discovery of a large blood clot in her hip, the result of a fall she suffered in September 2024.
Official statement on Queen Margrethe
The Royal House, headed by King Frederik X, has informed the media that the Queen "has been admitted to Rigshospitalet and is receiving treatment after a CT scan revealed a large blood clot in her hip area as a result of a previous fall."
However, despite the seriousness of the medical report, they emphasised that Margrethe "is doing well under the circumstances," although "she is expected to remain hospitalised for several days".
A fit family
The fun run was a family affair with Frederik and Mary's children also joining in, they were accompanied by Crown Prince Christian, 20, Princess Isabella, 19, and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, 15.
Queen Mary wore an official royal run T-shirt, tracksuit bottoms and pink trainers for the occasion. While she only competed in one race, King Frederik completed all three events on the day.
She told Danish TV channel, TV2: "I have to admit I have become a slow runner, but I ran the whole way. This year my husband wins because he is the only one who ran all the distances."
