There comes a moment in almost every woman's life - usually somewhere north of her 40th birthday - when she looks into her wardrobe and feels an overwhelming sense of disconnect. The reflection in the mirror has changed. The body has shifted, menopause may have moved in like an uninvited houseguest, and the confidence that once anchored her style choices feels like a distant memory.
We might have spent years focusing on everyone else: raising children, nurturing partners, climbing career ladders, and managing the endless logistics of family life. It's easy to slip into a uniform of safety and become pretty much invisible.
But 49-year-old Instagram sensation Sally Jacks - known to her fiercely loyal online community as @sallyjackstvmum is on a one-woman mission to stop the midlife fade. With her viral fashion hacks, infectious energy, and beautifully candid approach to ageing, Sally is teaching women over 40 how to fall back in love with their wardrobes - and themselves.
From Bucks Fizz to Fashion Influencer
If Sally’s face looks familiar, it’s because she is no stranger to the spotlight. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, she was performing on global stages with the reformed pop group Bucks Fizz alongside Mike Nolan and David Van Day. Even then, her eye for style and knack for creative disruption were obvious.
"I became heavily involved in styling and creative direction," Sally reminisces with a laugh. "One of my ideas - reversing the iconic Bucks Fizz skirt-rip by tearing away the tops instead - became a memorable part of the act."
When singer and producer Daz Sampson later told her she "talked too much" and belonged on the radio, she leaned into it, training with the BBC and anchoring the breakfast show at Heart Radio. But it was Eurovision legend Cheryl Baker who nudged her toward television, offering a blunt warning: “It’s the hardest job I’ve ever done.”
Sally took the leap anyway. For the past 16 years, she has been a powerhouse at BID TV, single-handedly transforming the fashion category from one of the channel’s weakest links into its absolute strongest. By taking control of the buying, styling, and creative direction, Sally learned exactly what real women want, what real women fear, and how to bridge the gap between the two. Now, she’s bringing that masterclass of experience directly to our social media feeds.
The Viral Wardrobe Hacks Every Woman Needs
What truly sets Sally apart on Instagram are her ingenious, accessible, and downright brilliant "hacks" for the two areas women complain about most: the tummy and the upper arms.
"Our bodies change, skin loses elasticity, and things simply don’t sit the way they once did," Sally says. "But that doesn’t mean you can’t still feel stylish and comfortable."
Foundations and Future Proofing
To kickstart your style rebirth, Sally recommends a strict wardrobe audit. It’s time to ditch anything overly tight (clothes should skim, not restrict) and clear out the outdated silhouettes that are dragging your look into the past.
Next, look at what’s underneath. "Great style starts before the clothes even go on," Sally points out. Invest in a proper, supportive T-shirt bra, and embrace what Sally affectionately calls "Knicker Bocker Glories" - cycling-short style knickers. "They avoid visible lines, don’t dig in, don’t ride up, and some offer gentle shaping too."
Once the foundations are set, building a confident daily look relies on just a few classic capsule formulas.
Shopping Like a Woman, Not an Impulsive Teenager
We’ve all done it: gone shopping while feeling low, bought the first thing that successfully zipped up, and left it hanging in the wardrobe with the tags on for six months. Sally compares our relationship with clothes to our love lives.
"Shopping for clothes is like looking for a partner - you wouldn’t choose the first person you meet, so why buy the first outfit you try on? Take your time, shop around, and try different styles. The best fit often comes when you least expect it."
Before you head to checkout, Sally urges you to ask two vital questions:
Do I need something to go with this?
How many pieces in my wardrobe will actually work with it?
Most importantly, divorce yourself from the number on the label. "Don’t be defined by your size," Sally insists. "Sizes vary hugely between brands, so focus on fit and how something makes you feel rather than the number on the tag. If you’re constantly pulling at your clothes or feeling uncomfortable, it will kill your confidence immediately."
The Midlife Uniform: 4 Foolproof Formulas
- The 'One and Done': A beautifully cut dress is the easiest, most effortless route to instant style.
- The Country-Chic Polish: A classic shirt paired with wide-leg trousers, finished with a lightweight jumper effortlessly draped and knotted over the shoulders.
- The Elevated Casual: A crisp white T-shirt, well-fitting straight-leg jeans, loafers or clean trainers, elevated with a high-quality bag and belt.
- The Ultimate Armour: A solid-colour blazer. It adds structure, sophistication, and an instant hit of boardroom-level confidence to absolutely any outfit.
Navigating the Hot-Flash Years with Style
Dressing your body during menopause requires a strategy shift. As teenagers, fashion was an experimental playground. Somewhere along the line, we lost that sense of play. Sally insists it’s time to bring it back.
"As we get older, our bodies naturally change," Sally notes. "Weight shifts, our shape evolves... Eventually, it’s time to bring the focus back to you. Dressing well over 40 isn’t about hiding yourself away. It’s about understanding your body and learning what works for you now."
The secret? Balance, structure, and fabric.
- The Monochromatic Miracle: "One of the easiest styling tricks I recommend is monochromatic dressing - wearing one colour head to toe," Sally shares. "It instantly looks elegant and expensive while elongating the body, making you appear taller and slimmer."
- The Classic Tailored Lift: Nothing beats a great shirt teamed with a tapered trouser. "Open the décolletage slightly and turn back the cuffs," Sally advises. "Small styling details instantly elevate an outfit."
- The Fabric Formula: For the hot-flash years, fabric choice is everything. Ditch the sweaty synthetics and embrace lightweight, breathable materials like cotton, linen, and silk. They look inherently luxurious and keep you cool under pressure.
- Bring Back the Belt: As we age, waist definition can vanish. A strategic belt creates instant structure. The only exception? "Apple body shapes," Sally warns. "Avoid drawing attention to the waist and instead highlight great arms or legs."
The Great Skinny Jeans Intervention
To understand why so many midlife women feel unfashionable, Sally points directly to a piece of denim we are all guilty of hoarding.
"Women over 40 have lived in skinny jeans for more than twenty years," Sally says candidly. "They became our comfort blanket. But fashion has moved on, and wider-leg trousers and jeans are now everywhere."
When Sally posts about transitioning to wide-leg or straight-cut styles, the pushback from her audience is instant: “I don’t suit them.” But Sally isn’t buying it.
"Often, it’s not that they don’t suit you - it’s that you’re not used to seeing yourself in them. That’s a completely different thing. Wider-leg styles are often far more flattering. They elongate the body, skim over areas we’re conscious of, balance proportions beautifully, and instantly modernise an outfit. We can’t expect to look current while refusing to evolve. Staying stuck in old habits can age us just as much as anything else."
According to Sally, the most stylish women on the planet don't have the biggest budgets; they simply possess the willingness to stay curious, experiment, and step out of their comfort zones.
