Kurt Cobain's death at the age of 27 back in 1994 was a shock to the world of music, coming just a few short years after Nirvana had skyrocketed to fame.
The band's frontman, who was married to eventual Hole frontwoman Courtney Love at the time, died from what was ruled to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound in April of 1994, sparking an outpouring of sadness and, of course, differing opinions.
While theories surrounding the death of the grunge pioneer have remained prevalent for decades, from accusations of murder to staged deaths, a new peer-reviewed study claims to have a definitive verdict on the matter.
First reported by the Daily Mail, a peer-reviewed new research paper, led by independent forensic specialists Bryan Burnett and Michelle Wilkins, is alleging that his death was actually a homicide, although rules out any notion of who could be behind it.
The forensic specialists claim to have studied the autopsy and the available evidence surrounding the incident, alleging that one or more people were responsible for forcing an overdose, likely of heroin, to incapacitate the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" singer, before delivering a fatal gunshot wound.
The paper, published in the International Journal of Forensic Sciences on November 6, 2025, states in its thesis: "Kurt Cobain, based solely on publicly available discovery and analyzed through a multidisciplinary critical method, was a homicide victim. His body was moved from the site of the homicide and staged to appear as a suicide."
Per the Mail, Michelle stated: "There are things in the autopsy that go, well, wait, this person didn't die very quickly of a gunshot blast. The necrosis of the brain and liver happens in an overdose. It doesn't happen in a shotgun death."
Their study was conducted as part of an unofficial, independent research project, so there is no official verdict to the claims as of writing.
The King County Medical Examiner, which had initially ruled the death a suicide back in 1994, shared a statement with the Mail that read: "King County Medical Examiner's Office worked with the local law enforcement agency, conducted a full autopsy, and followed all of its procedures in coming to the determination of the manner of death as a suicide."
"Our office is always open to revisiting its conclusions if new evidence comes to light, but we've seen nothing to date that would warrant re-opening of this case and our previous determination of death."
However, the Seattle Police Department shut down the claims in a statement provided to the publication, refusing to reopen the nearly 32-year-old case. "Our detective concluded that he died by suicide, and this continues to be the position held by this department," it read.
No member of the immediate Cobain family has commented on the matter as of writing or released any official statement corroborating with or disputing the same.
