Rene Russo's career has had her star alongside Pierce Brosnan, Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson and Clint Eastwood. But her most important romance is surely a notable meet-cute with her now-husband and collaborator, a meeting that almost didn't happen. The 90s star has since had a daughter, taken a break from show business before making a triumphant return, and collaborated with California's Water and Power department for a packed (and varied) portfolio.
We're celebrating her 72nd birthday by taking a look inside her famous family, journeying into her modelling career and tracing her evolution into an A-list star and top pick for every 90s feature searching for a female lead.

Rene began her career as a model after being scouted
Rene Russo’s early career
Rene Russo didn’t set out to make it in the world of acting, although it seems she was destined to be in front of the camera. John Crosby scouted the model-turned-actress while Rene was still in high school and she quickly became one of the 1970s and 1980s favourite models, featuring on the cover of magazines like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.
Her first role was in the short-running 1980s superhero series, Sable, about a children’s book writer who transforms into a vigilante at night. In 1988, she starred as Elena in Meanwhile in Santa Monica, a short film about a family of Russian emigrants who run a small restaurant in Santa Monica.
