From Shakespeare to Berlin, Michael York's early career covered a lot of ground

Early career

Michael York got his dramatic, or rather comedic, start in the 1967 Shakespearean film The Taming of the Shrew as Lucentio who falls for the beautiful Bianca at first sight. He followed this with one of his most well-known roles in the tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet as Tybalt, Juliet’s hot-headed cousin.

Just four years later, Michael starred as writer and temporary English teacher Brian Roberts in Cabaret (1972) who has to navigate personal relationships and political threat as a bisexual man during the rise of the Nazi regime.

Michael York starred alongside the 1960s actress in Alexandre Dumas' tale of love and adventure

The Three Musketeers

All for one and one for all! The Cabaret star crossed paths with 1960s favourite Raquel Welch a year later in 1973’s The Three Musketeers, a film adaption of Alexandre Dumas’ 1844 novel. Michael was cast as the sprightly fourth honorary Musketeer, D’Artagnan while Raquel took on the role of leading lady Constance de Bonacieux.

The characters fall quickly in love in The Three Musketeers, unlike the extensive yearning of Dumas’ novel. Sadly, Raquel’s Constance meets her end in The Four Musketeers when Faye Dunaway’s Milady strangles her with a rosary, and Michael York is without his co-star in the 1989 revival The Return of the Musketeers - although he reprised his role as D’Artagnan.

The famed actor married photographer Patricia McCallum in 1968 and the pair have remained happily together since. They met a year prior when Patricia was assigned to photograph rising star Michael. He recalled to The Lady, “I was told that someone called Pat McCallum was coming for an interview so I was expecting this Irishman. But I opened the door, and there’s this beautiful blonde.”

Michael didn’t spot her camera bag. Instead, he boiled the kettle and the two got chatting. A little later, the actor decided to address the elephant in the room: “I said, ‘Is there anything you’d like to ask me?’ and she gave me a funny look and said, ‘No’. I thought it must be some strange new form of interview technique.”

His daughter, Michael’s step-granddaughter, has followed in her father’s footsteps into production with set production assistant credits across Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005), Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Thor (2011).

Later Career

Michael was cast in one of his best known roles two years after the second Three Musketeers movie. The Oscar-winning feature Logan’s Run (1976) starred Michael York as the titular Logan in Michael Anderson’s futuristic dystopian world.

The film explores a society where mankind is free of all work but which terminates the lives of its members when they turn 30. Michael stars as a Sandman, whose job it is to track down and kill so-called “runners” who want to escape their fate, sent to infiltrate and destroy an outside community called “Sanctuary”.

Michael York’s other notable roles include regular appearances in the Austin Powers franchise as Basil Exposition, Austin’s mission-giver, a role he took on again for Madonna’s Beautiful Stranger music video which featured in the second film’s soundtrack, and a 4 episode appearance in Gilmore Girls, as the older boyfriend of Liza Weil's character, Paris Geller.

Michael York wrote about his diagnosis in his book The Readiness is All

Diagnosis and Recovery

Michael noticed persistent dark circles around his eyes in 2008, which was later diagnosed as AL amyloidosis. Writing on the Amyloidosis Foundation’s website, the actor credits his “wonderfully supportive wife” with finding Dr Robert Kyle, who is a pioneer in haematology. Dr Kyle corrected a previous wrong diagnosis of multiple myeloma. Michael has since received stem cell treatment for dominant AL amyloidosis and writes about the process in his book The Readiness is All.

As of 2024, the actor reported that he and his wife have made the permanent move from Los Angeles to be closer to the Mayo Clinic.
