It appears Amy Madigan and Ed Harris have had a decades-long romance right under our noses.
While it may come as no surprise to older generations, as younger generations come to know the powerhouse that is the Field of Dreams actress thanks to her chilling role as Aunt Gladys in Weapons, many have been pleasantly surprised to learn that she has been married to the Apollo 13 actor for over 40 years.
A Reddit post from late February reads: "I was today years old when I learned that Amy Madigan (Jane Hanratty, a.k.a. "Crazy Jane") has been married to Ed Harris for over forty years!" to which others replied with: "Wow!! I love random celeb facts and this one was not even on my radar."
Catch up on the couple's love story and family life below.
Their relationship predates Amy's screen debut
Amy, 75, and Ed, also 75, met in 1980 at a Los Angeles rehearsal for the play Cowboy Mouth. Speaking with Life Magazine for a feature in 1985, Amy gushed: "Being together and working together is like a gift from the cornucopia of wonderfulness that fell out of heaven or something."
Recalling when she first saw him on stage, Amy said: "It was like something you see in a movie or hear in a song," adding: "I just thought — 'Well, there he is.' It was obvious to me that I'd see him again."
One year later, at another play's rehearsal, Amy asked Ed over to her house for a tuna sandwich, and though nothing happened between them that day, Ed told Life that eventually, "nature took its course."
They tied the knot in 1983
Amy made her screen debut in 1982, starring in Love Child, and among her many subsequent projects have been various collaborations with her husband. The first of them was Places in the Heart, and during filming, they tied the knot on November 21, 1983.
"Marriage became inevitable when she critiqued my performance in Fool for Love [another Shepard play] and I found myself listening without getting defensive," he told Life.
They wed one morning after breakfast while on location for Places in the Heart, by the Waxahachie County justice of the peace, with their stray dog Girl as their only witness.
Amy and Ed have one daughter
Ten years after tying the knot, Amy and Ed welcomed their first and only child together, daughter Lily Dolores Harris, who graduated from Reed College in 2016, since which Amy has been a board of trustees member.
Lily has followed in the footsteps of her famous parents, making her screen debut on an episode of Chicago Med in 2021, and has since then worked on a handful of shorts.
