'80s rocker Bernie Lynch passed away aged 72 following a lengthy battle with throat cancer, with his bandmate and ex-wife, Grace Knight, announcing the news on social media.
Bernie co-founded the pop group Eurogliders in the '80s with Grace in Perth, Australia, and the group enjoyed success with several of their tracks reaching the charts. They are best known for songs like "We Will Together", "Can't Wait to See You" and "Heaven (Must Be There)", the latter of which became their breakout single in 1984 and skyrocketed them to fame.
The group went their separate ways in the late '80s, yet reunited on several occasions for album tours and festival sets, including in the early '00s and in 2023. Grace, who was married to Bernie between 1985 and 1986, shared a touching tribute to her friend on Instagram, accompanied by a photo of them in a recording booth from the early days of the band.
"It's with a heavy heart I'm posting this to let everyone know that Bernie passed away last Thursday," she began, before detailing that he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2024 and responded to the treatment until the disease returned in late 2025.
"I am heartbroken and don't know how to proceed without him," she continued. "I arrived in Australia in 1977 and met Bernie not too long after; we've been in each other's lives ever since. I can't imagine what our lives would have looked like had we not crossed paths with each other."
"I don't know how many shows Eurogliders have done over the years, it's thousands, and for every single one of them, I've had Bernie there, standing beside me. It's been such a wonderful journey, and I'm so proud and honored to have shared it with him," Grace declared.
The 70-year-old recalled that Bernie was incredibly kind and always made sure the band was well-fed throughout the years.
"And, of course, there's the songs," she said. "Without Bernie's songs, there would be no Eurogliders. Songs he wrote as a young man that are still being listened to, songs that 40 years later still get played on the radio, songs that people still sing along to at our shows."
Grace concluded with a poignant message about their time together, both on and off the stage. "My dear friend. We soared high, we grappled in the mud. What an incredible life we shared. I feel immense gratitude. I can't let you go; I won't let you go."
Bernie, the band's guitarist, singer and songwriter, met Grace through her sister at a barbecue in the late '70s, and the couple dated for six years before tying the knot.
After their split, Grace detailed in the Sydney Morning Herald that they were estranged for just two weeks and quickly reconciled as friends. Bernie's last gig was in Newcastle in November 2025, and he was set to take the stage with his band on March 28 in Sydney.
