Noah Wyle has broken his silence on his co-star Supriya Ganesh's surprise exit from The Pitt.
It was announced April 2 that the Dr. Samira Mohan actress would be departing the hit series after season two, which comes to an end with its 15th episode on Thursday, April 16.
Now, the E.R. alum as well as creator R. Scott Gemmill have given insight into the decision, which was previously reported as having been story-driven.
Noah, speaking with Variety at PaleyFest LA's The Pitt screening and panel, noted: "It's an inevitability that's going to happen every season with this show because as writers we're hard pressed to figure out what a lapse of time we can have and keep most of the ensemble together realistically."
The outlet had previously reported that Dr. Mohan's departure was meant to emulate the frequency with which residents come and go at a teaching hospital, as is the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center in the show.
"Emergency rooms have a high revolving door. As always, we try to bring in new characters or promote from within as we go through these cast changes and try to keep the storylines fresh, but obviously Supriya has been a huge part of our show since the beginning," Noah maintained.
He added: "Dr. Mohan is a beloved character, and I love playing with her and working with Supriya, and we wish her all the best in her next endeavors, and we're going to miss her."
Supriya was initially meant to attend the PaleyFest screening, however she wrote on her social media the day prior: "Hi everyone, not sure why it's not removed off the site but I will not be at PaleyFest this Sunday," adding: "I know some of you bought tickets to see me and I hope you know this is not a decision I take lightly. Love you all."
In the later half of season two, Dr. Mohan is already seen debating what the next phase of her career will be once her residency ends, and struggling to keep up with the pace of a trauma center. She had appeared in four of the 15 episodes in season one, and all of season two.
Prior to her total 19 episodes of The Pitt, she appeared in two episodes of Grown-ish and had guest appearances on Billions, Chicago Med, and Law & Order: SVU. Her TV debut was in a 2018 episode of Blue Bloods.
R. Scott similarly weighed in with: "It's sort of the nature of the show. Unfortunately, the way the medical profession works, you come in, you learn, you move on, and we want to try and be as truthful to that process as possible."
"So we're going to turn over our cast," he further told Variety. "But I think it's a great launching pad for people and that's the best we can do."
