Alan had been suffering with progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) since 1987.

The disease attacks the central nervous system, causing various difficult symptoms including issues walking, fatigue, numbness and vision impairment.

Alan had to eventually retire from the stage as his mobility declined. But his motto remained: "I may have MS, but MS does NOT have me!"

Alan was the third son of George and Olive Osmond, but the oldest of the performing "original four." Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay Osmond started the musical venture which later included younger brothers Donny and Jimmy.

Alan's vision helped the brothers transition from a barbershop quartet on The Andy Williams Show to the leather-clad, stadium-filling rock band of the 1970s.

The Osmonds became a pop phenomenon and Alan took control as a songwriter, composer and "protector" of the family.

He produced some of their biggest hits, including "One Bad Apple" and "Down By The Lazy River".

In 1972, the family launched a weekly cartoon series that followed their antics and featured their most popular songs.

Alan and his family starred in the show until it ended in 1973. It later transitioned into a variety show starring his siblings Donny and Marie, which was named after the brother-sister duo.

He was the protector

Alan was often the buffer between his younger siblings and the intense pressures of fame.

Even when Donny and Marie eclipsed the group with their solo fame, Alan continued to support them and even produced their shows to keep the family true to their wholesome values.
