New forensic insights may be shedding light on the final moments of Savannah Guthrie's missing mom Nancy Guthrie, as experts analyse crucial evidence discovered outside her home.
Retired FBI special agent Jim Clemente has offered a detailed breakdown of blood evidence found on the front stoop of the 84-year-old’s property, suggesting the patterns could help reconstruct what happened in the moments before she vanished.
Speaking to NewsNation, Jim explained that the positioning and structure of the blood spatter reveal highly specific clues about Guthrie’s physical state at the time.
"This tells me a number of things, and it’s very specific," he said. "One is that, at this point, Nancy’s face was very close to the ground, within a foot of the ground. This could be she was either on her knees, hunched over, or actually lying on the ground.”
According to Jim, the nature of the blood pattern indicates it was not simply dripping from a wound, but expelled under force. He pointed to distinct circular markings, described as hollow or ring-shaped, which are often associated with a person coughing or aspirating blood.
"Medium velocity can be created when somebody actually aspirates blood and then coughs it up" he explained. "You can see three circular blood spots, but they are hollow. You see mainly the rings. This definitely came from her. She coughed it out.”
Authorities have since confirmed through DNA testing that the blood found at the scene does belong to Nancy, reinforcing the significance of the findings.
Jim also noted a shift in the blood pattern further along the walkway, which he believes could indicate movement after the initial incident.
"The pattern appears to change" he said, suggesting Guthrie may have been carried away from the area, "perhaps with her face up" as the blood drops do not continue consistently along the path.
These observations align with earlier analysis from forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden, who previously told Fox News Digital that the blood likely originated from the face or hands. He also highlighted the distinctive "donut-shaped” drops as a key indicator.
"The nature of the blood spots with little pale centers are typical for drops that come from the nose or mouth, because they’re mixed with ai,r" Baden explained. "That means she’s coughing up blood or dripping from the nose. Otherwise, there would be dripping from a cut from above.”
Nancy Guthrie has been missing since Sunday, February 1, and the case continues to raise urgent questions as investigators work to piece together her final movements.
While no definitive conclusions have been reached, experts say the forensic evidence provides a critical window into what may have unfolded, offering both direction for the investigation and hope that answers could still emerge.
