The last two years have been a rollercoaster for Ryan Reynolds, as he has supported his wife, Blake Lively, through a controversial lawsuit in which he is also named, has taken a break from his big-screen career and continued to watch the Welsh soccer club which he co-owns, Wrexham, rise through the leagues.
However, on Saturday, May 2, 2026, Ryan received even more bad news as the team missed the chance to be promoted to the Premier League this season, the highest league in the UK.
"I am completely gutted by today’s result but incredibly proud of our season," Ryan shared on Instagram. "We’ve come a long way in five years and this was the best result in our 150-plus year history. More to do. But for now, we have so much to be proud of, Reds."
Wrexham, also known as the Red Dragons, shot through the football ranks after Ryan and co-owner Rob Mac purchased the club in 2020. The team was in the National League, the fifth tier, but over the past six years have risen through to the Championship, one level below the Premier League.
On Saturday, Wrexham played Middlesbrough and the game ended in a 2-2 draw, which left Wrexham finishing the season in seventh and outside the play-off spots.
Rob Mac said he was "so proud" of the team and "honored to have made it this far, our highest league finish in the history of the club" in a post on Instagram. He added: "Phil [Parkinson, manager] said it best leading into this game, 'the togetherness has already taken us a long way.' Up the town!"
Rob, who is married to High Potential star Kaitlin Olson, also highlighted the incredible improvements made in the team over the years with a compilation "how it started vs how it’s going" video on his social media account.
The team's story, as well as that of the players, staff, and local fans, have been documented in the FX docuseries Welcome To Wrexham since 2021.
The show has won 10 Emmys Awards and two Critics’ Choice Television Awards, and season five will premiere later in 2026, taking viewers on the past 12 months as Ryan, Rob, Phil, and the staff built a new-look squad.
As well as placing his focus on the team, Ryan has been embroiled in a tense legal battle concerning allegations of sexual harassment and defamation by Justin Baldoni, the director and Blake's co-star in It Ends With Us, against Blake.
Ryan, 49, has been named in several of the documents, and the case is expected to go to trial in May 2026. In April, a judge dismissed 10 of the 13 claims that Blake has filed against Justin, 42. The case will now focus on only three claims: breach of contract, retaliation, and aiding and abetting to retaliation.
"Without getting into too much, I'll just say, I've never in my life been more proud of my wife," Ryan shared on Sunday Sitdown with Today Show's Willie Geist.
"People have no idea what's really going on, you know? And I've just never in my life been more proud of someone with that level of integrity that brings that with them and carries that with them in everything that they do."
