Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger have been married since 2019, just one year after he finalised his divorce from Anna Faris, and have put in a lot of work to make their marriage the best that it can be, including pre-martial counselling to prepare for the issues he may face.
During a virtual fireside chat called Riveter Reads: The Gift of Forgiveness with Katherine Schwarzenegger in April 2020, the daughter of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver explained how communication is key to their relationship. She said: "I got married last June, and communication constantly is really the most amazing gift you can have in a partnership and in a relationship."
Katherine, now 36, revealed that she and her actor husband have one non-negotiable that they absolutely do not waver on, saying: "I'm not good with leaving things unsaid. I can't do it. I'm not the kind of person who is able to do it.
"I don't like to go to bed angry," she continued. "And we are both the same way. We both do not ever want to go to bed angry."
Though she explained how they both "communicate a lot [...] no matter how crazy [their] days are," Katherine is also completely aware that the couple do not have it all figured out.
"My mom also likes to remind me that I will learn more as the years go on," the writer revealed. "So I'll come back to you in 20 years, or 30 years, or 40 years, and give a constant update on it."
How Chris Pratt is helping his marriage work
In a recent interview, Chris shared how he and Katherine had undergone premarital counselling to help their marriage work.
Speaking to his close friend Rob Lowe on his podcast on SiriusXM, Literally! With Rob Lowe, he recalled how they had a ceremony at St Monica's Church in Santa Monica in addition to their grand wedding at San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California.
"Part of getting married at St. Monica's church is doing premarital counseling," he explained, adding: "We did like, six sessions with this guy who was, by the way, the best thing in the world." St. Monica's Catholic Church is a Catholic parish in Santa Monica, and Chris is likely referring to Pre-Cana. This is a mandatory Catholic program for engaged couples to prepare for marriage, named after the wedding where Jesus performed his first miracle.
The actor explained: "If you're somebody who's thinking of getting married, you should definitely follow this. They ask you questions you would not even think to answer until you have been married for eight years and then something comes up and you're like, 'What do you mean?' That's what you think about that?," and then you have to negotiate it then, like re-negotiating every landmine."
Chris and Katherine now have three children: Lyla, five, Eloise, three, and Ford, who is just 15 months old.
