Aaron Taylor-Johnson paid a sweet tribute to his filmmaker wife Sam for her 59th birthday on Wednesday. The couple, who have been married since 2012, took a trip to Rome, otherwise known as the Eternal City, to mark the occasion.

Aaron, 35, took to Instagram to share his love for his wife, who turned 59 on 4 March. "Me and you… in Rome. Happy Birthday baby xxx," he penned, to which Sam replied with three red heart emojis.

The actor also shared a few snippets of the couple's trip together, where they posed in front of a picturesque stone wall while also touring some of the city's most famous museums.

Sam marked the trip on her own Instagram, where she posted close-up shots of the art and sculptures, as well as an empty pasta bowl that had been playfully drawn with a love heart in the sauce.

When did Aaron and Sam get married?

The starry couple first met on the set of the 2009 biopic Nowhere Boy, in which Aaron starred as John Lennon alongside Kristin Scott Thomas, Anne-Marie Duff and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

The movie was Sam's directorial debut. When speaking to Harper's Bazaar, she said she was simply expecting to see "a bunch of actors pretending to be John Lennon" on the day she would meet her future husband.

"We were very professional through the entire film," the couple said in their joint interview, before Sam added: "But everyone on set knew. And as soon as we finished, he told me he was going to marry me. We had never been on a date or even kissed."
