Stuart Little. Jerry Maguire. The Little Vampire. Back in the 1990s, Jonathan Lipnicki became one of the most recognisable Hollywood child stars thanks to his leading roles alongside the likes of Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger and Michael J Fox, before largely disappearing from the public eye.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of his big-screen debut in Jerry Maguire, and just like fellow nineties child star Mara Wilson, Jonathan also participated in a nostalgic social media trend in March, where he shared a video captioned with the question: "Jonathan, what were you like in the 90s?"
The video showed images from his roles in hit films such as Jerry Maguire and Stuart Little, along with him on the red carpet alongside stars including Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. "The 90s and early 2000s taught me what I wanted to pursue for the rest of my life," Jonathan wrote.
His nostalgic glimpse at his childhood was well received by fans, including one who wrote: "Stuart Little was the movie that introduced me to you and your range of talent! Still brings a ton of childhood nostalgia."
Jonathan's career evolution
The 35-year-old describes himself on his Instagram account as an actor, producer, dog father and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. While he has struggled to replicate the leading roles he landed in his childhood, Jonathan has worked consistently, with recent credits including the 2026 movie Anywhere, and ten episodes playing himself in The Joe Schmo Show.
Following his incredible success, Jonathan recently admitted that he struggled making the transition from child star to an adult in the movie industry. Speaking on the Pod Meets World podcast, he shared: "I didn't work for a number of years so every time I work now I get very emotional about it. I love doing this. I got very fortunate with these roles but I've had to work ten times as hard behind the back end to get the roles I do today including producing and making projects for myself, you know or to be able to be in or find good projects and that's something I don't take lightly.
"I work incredibly hard and it's always on my mind and I know the best is yet to come for me with the track record of not working for a while, most people you know would quit and I just don't have that in me."
Never giving up
Jonathan is very open about his career aspirations, and speaking to People in 2025 he admitted he is "not where I want to be career-wise", but that he was okay with it for now. "Everything we’re doing in this life is nearly impossible," he said. "This is the thing I want to do for the rest of my life, and I think you just have to believe it’s going to happen and do everything in your power to take action in the right direction."
The Little Vampire star continued: "I just really want to turn this ship around. And I pray every night for clarity on where I need to go, and I’m confident the best is yet to come for me. And I think you just have to believe that. If you’re going to pursue this, you’re doing yourself a disservice not to dream big."
Jonathan’s surprise moves
While the 35-year-old is in a relationship, judging by recent Instagram posts, back in 2017, he made a surprising career move by starring in E4's Celebs Go Dating. Jonathan appeared on the show alongside the likes of Gemma Collins and Sam Thompson, and while he took his date Rebecca to Los Angeles, he didn't find lasting love.
