Andrew Lloyd Webber is a legend of the theatre as the composer behind musical classics like The Phantom of the Opera, Cats and Evita. But behind the curtains, the star has a large family of four children, as well as a late son, who have been a great support on his sobriety journey.

The composer recently revealed that he is a "recovering alcoholic" in a candid new interview.  In a chat with The Times, the star shared he keeps two bracelets that are a sweet nod to his children, and which help to "stop [him from] drinking".

One of the bracelets is inscribed with his late son Nicholas' name, and the other is a tribute to his four living children: daughters Imogen and Isabella, and his sons Alastair and William. Speaking of how his family have supported him during his health struggle, Andrew recalled one instance: "I went in [to my flat] and there were all these balloons with ‘1’ on them – my youngest daughter had sent them to celebrate me being one year sober."

Read on for all you need to know about the composer's family life with his four children from two marriages, as well as the heartbreaking loss of his eldest son three years ago.

Andrew became a first-time father in March 1997 when he and his first wife, Sarah Hugill, welcomed a daughter named Imogen.

Imogen, 44, is an author and journalist, and is the older sister of Andrew and Sarah's late son, Nicholas, who passed away in March 2023.

"Three years ago today. Missing you every day, little bro," Imogen marked the anniversary of her brother's passing in March 2026.

Andrew's eldest son Nicholas passed away at age 43 from gastric cancer three years ago. Nicholas had followed in his famous father's footsteps with composition work, and was best known for the BBC's Love, Lies and Records.

After dedicating the final show of The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway in 2023 to the memory of his late son, Andrew wrote in an essay for The New York Times: "Nothing's worse for a parent than the death of a child. In my bones I feel it wrong to write about the closing of Phantom or where Broadway's going right now. But I’ll try."

In his recent interview with The Times, Andrew candidly shared that his late son "was [an] alcoholic".

"He was in a dreadful mess and came out of it, but I couldn’t help noticing how he’d changed. He got stomach cancer and one doesn’t know what caused it, but I can’t believe that all the medication he was on helped," Andrew admitted.

Andrew welcomed three more children with his third wife, Madeleine Gurdon, whom he has been married to since 1991.

Their eldest son, Alastair (pictured far left), was born in 1992, and has gone on to work in the music industry like his dad. In February, Alastair, 33, shared on Instagram that the record label he had co-founded, The Other Songs, was a finalist in the 2026 Music Week Awards.

In his personal life, the 33-year-old has been married to his wife Jenny since 2021 and is a dad of two.

Billy, 32, keeps a pretty low profile compared to his siblings, and has set his Instagram account to private.
