Before becoming romantically involved, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard co-starred in the 2011 adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary, where they met for the first time.
After filming together, they dated and tied the knot in 2015. Amber filed for divorce and a restraining order just 15 months later, claiming allegations of domestic abuse.
What followed was a complicated series of legal cases and trials that played out for the world to see, starting with a UK libel trial in 2020 involving the British tabloids.
Moving the dispute state-side, Johnny then filed a defamation lawsuit in Virginia against his ex-wife, prompted by her 2018 Washington Post op-ed where she identified herself as a public figure campaigning against domestic abuse.
Amber retaliated and launched a counterclaim, accusing her ex of deploying a smear campaign to harm her image and ruin her career.
The six-week trial that followed was live-streamed globally in 2022, and ultimately, a Virginia jury overwhelmingly declared Johnny the winner.

Behind the scenes of the wildly popular US reality show, cast members Rachel Leviss, Tom Sandoval, and Ariana Madix still find themselves embroiled in a bitter legal feud.
Starting in 2024, after it was revealed that Tom had a months-long affair with his co-star Rachel behind his partner Ariana's back, Rachel decided to file a civil lawsuit for invasion of privacy and revenge porn.
In her suit, she accused Tom of "surreptitiously recording" an explicit FaceTime video of her without her consent, and further claimed that Ariana shared it thereafter.
Next, Tom filed a cross-complaint against Ariana in an attempt to legally force her to pay for any financial damages he might owe Rachel. Shortly after, Tom dropped the suit and fired his lawyer less than two days later.
The lawsuit, as it relates to illegal surveillance and video distribution, remains active in court.

Rob Kardashian's ex-fiancée Blac Chyna starred alongside the reality royalty in the 2016 E! spin-off series Rob & Chyna.
The couple ultimately split up in December 2016, following an intense argument and their series was not renewed for a second season by the network.
In 2017, Blac Chyna launched a $100 million defamation and contract interference lawsuit against family members Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, and Kylie Jenner, claiming the family used their star power to falsely depict her as violent, intentionally harming her TV career.
What followed was a nine-day civil trial where the entire Kardashian family took the stand in 2022.
A Los Angeles jury ruled that the Kardashian-Jenners were victorious in the case and awarded Blac Chyna zero dollars in financial damages.
Later, the model and influencer settled a separate revenge porn lawsuit against Rob out of court.
