Duchess Sophie never misses in the style stakes. From statement wide-legged trousers to daring animal print, the wife of Prince Edward always looks brilliant, and tonight was no exception.

The Duchess of Edinburgh joined King Charles and Queen Camilla for a reception at Windsor Castle to honour carers across the UK, alongside Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his wife, Victoria Starmer.

For the emotional event, Duchess Sophie opted to wear a timeless monochrome polka dot dress with sheer sleeves – and it isn't the first time she's slipped into the patterned number.

Duchess Sophie first wore the dress in 2021

Back in 2021, Duchess Sophie wore the Carolina Herrera dress to an event at Hillsborough Castle in honour of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association's 50th Annual British Isle and Mediterranean Region Conference (BIMR). Back then, she swept her blonde hair into an updo, but for the Windsor Castle reception, the 61-year-old wore her hair loose around her shoulders, adding subtle jewelled earrings and a matching necklace.

Feeling playful

Duchess Sophie has numerous dotty dresses in her royal wardrobe and the fun pattern is a popular pattern with other royals too.

Princess Kate frequently wears the fun print and Princess Beatrice a fan too – and it conveys a special message according to colour psychologist and director of design at Lick Colour, Tash Bradley.

"Someone who is wearing polka dots wants to portray a fun-ness, a playfulness. When you think of polka dots you instantly soften," Tash begins. "When you go for polka dots it's playful, it opens up conversation, it makes you give off a sort of warm feel."

Commenting on the royal ladies’ penchant for polka dots at public engagements, she continued: "It's interesting that they've all gone for polka dots because that straight away just screams out fun. That you're there to have a bit of fun, you're not trying to take yourself too seriously, you're trying to be softer in your approach."

Duchess Sophie's recent fashion choices

Just last week, Duchess Sophie looked resplendent in one of the most luxurious pieces she owns; a £3,000 chocolate-hued maxi dress from Armani, constructed from a silk that, though muted, features a small shine.

The dress has a high, rounded neckline and hugs the figure through the bodice and waist, falling into a dipped hem on the back. With her fashion choices sensational so far this year, we look forward to Duchess Sophie's next public occasion.
