"No one puts Baby in a corner" is perhaps one of the most famous lines in cinema, delivered by Patrick Swayze about Jennifer Grey's character in the 1987 film Dirty Dancing.
Alongside her appearance in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Dirty Dancing marked Jennifer's second breakout role, catapulting her to stardom opposite Patrick, who played dance instructor Johnny Castle.
In the years that followed, Jennifer, 65, built a varied career, with roles in films and television including Red Dawn, It's Like, You Know…, Friends, Grey's Anatomy and A Real Pain. With a Dirty Dancing sequel currently in development, and Jennifer set to reprise her iconic role as Baby, the actress has also been announced to star alongside Hudson Williams (Heated Rivalry) in the limited series The Altruists.
However, like many in the public eye, Jennifer has faced intense scrutiny over her appearance – something she has spoken about candidly over the years, including in her 2022 memoir, Out of the Corner.
Jennifer Grey's surgeries
Jennifer has revealed that she underwent two nose surgeries following the success of Dirty Dancing. "After Dirty Dancing, I was America's sweetheart, which you would think would be the key to unlocking all my hopes and dreams," she wrote in her memoir. "But it didn't go down that way."
After repeatedly being told her nose was "a problem", Jennifer decided to undergo surgery – but not before consulting her mother, actress and singer Jo Wilder, as well as three plastic surgeons.
"My so-called 'problem' wasn't really a problem for me, but since it seemed to be a problem for other people, and it didn't appear to be going away anytime soon, by default it became my problem," she wrote. "It was as plain as the nose on my face."
After her first rhinoplasty, Jennifer underwent a second procedure to correct an irregularity, but the result left her partially unrecognisable. "Overnight, I lose my identity and my career," she said.
A fatal accident
In 1987, Jennifer was also involved in a fatal car accident with her Ferris Bueller's Day Off co-star Matthew Broderick, which resulted in the deaths of two people. The actress later required spinal surgery decades after the incident.
"We were so young," Grey told The Irish Times. "And there's not a week that goes by that I don't think about it. That I don't think about the families. That I don't think about Matthew. It's just in me. It's part of my topographical map, the landscape of my life."
As we eagerly await Jennifer's upcoming roles, we're taking a look back at her most iconic looks over the years, from her 'Baby' days in the 1980s to the present.
