Amal Clooney was a vision in magenta on Monday night as the human rights lawyer stepped out on a glamorous date night with her husband, George Clooney, to the 51st Chaplin Award Gala honouring the Jay Kelly star at the Lincoln Center in New York City.

Amal, 48, stepped out in a satin mini dress featuring a strapless neckline and puffed design, cinching at the waist and blending seamlessly into a tight mini skirt. The micro Balenciaga dress also featured a section of fabric that cascaded down the back for added drama.

As for her accessories, the star added a gorgeous pair of gold stilettos and a clutch to match. She also wore statement gold drop earrings and a bangle courtesy of Cartier. Her hair also added to the appeal of the look, especially as it marked a departure from her usual Old Hollywood waves.

Amal rocked a playful swishy ponytail with curtain bangs that had been cut in and were pulled out from the updo to frame her face beautifully. The piece de resistance was her radiant makeup look featuring bubblegum pink cheeks, a brown-toned nude lip, and fluttery false lashes.

For a block-colour mini dress, Amal's look made a big impact. To understand Amal's style choice for this event, we've enlisted the help of stylist Leanne Jones, who trained at the London College of Style, to analyse her look.

"This is a departure from her usual full-length gown aesthetic, it really works for her - and it’s a great reminder that there is absolutely no harm in switching up your style at any age or stage of life. From a styling perspective, the colour is absolutely on point as a feature colour for SS26 direction," Leanne tells us.

Magenta is a colour that suits Amal's complexion and hair colour perfectly, as she proved at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival

"Magenta is a statement shade that commands attention, and this Balenciaga dress makes a real impact through both tone and silhouette. It’s also a colour that symbolises transformation, creativity and non-conformity - a powerful message when Amal is flanked by men in black tie attire!"

The hair only adds to the impact of Amal's look. The stylist says: "She rarely hides that gorgeous mane of hers, but pulling it back here is a clever styling decision - it allows the neckline and off-the-shoulder detail to take focus and beautifully frames her décolletage.

Amal's mini dress featured a train for extra drama

Fans of Amal's style can certainly take a leaf out of her book when it comes to styling an uber-short mini dress in their 40s. To help, Leanne has offered her top tips…

  1. The key is choosing the right shape for you. Amal’s dress is fitted at the skirt, but if that feels too restrictive, an A-line or softer puffball silhouette can offer more movement while still highlighting the legs.
  2. Prints and textures can also help soften cling and draw the eye in a different way.
  3. Heels play an important role in elongating the leg and balancing proportions.
