The Princess of Wales looked so elegant on Saturday as she stepped out for the Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey as part of the ANZAC Day commemorations.

She debuted a new sculpted navy coat dress by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, her bridal designer, which featured bold white lapels, a wrap front, and boxy shoulders for added structure.

Kate, 44, was perfectly coordinated when it came to her accessories. The wife of Prince William added a new bespoke percher hat by Jane Taylor, as well as navy pumps by Gianvito Rossi.

Her mini bag was the 'Nano Montreal Bag in Navy' by Demellier, as identified by Royal Fashion Police on Instagram, and the finishing touches came in the form of her pear-shaped tanzanite and diamond pendant necklace by G.Collins & Sons and Princess Diana's diamond and sapphire double cluster earrings.

The heirloom earrings were not the only way Kate paid tribute to her late mother-in-law, as it seemed her entire look took style cues from Princess Diana. In 1995, Prince William's mother stepped out in Germany to present new colours to the Light Dragoon Guards Regiment.

She wore a navy skirt suit with white lapels that looked almost identical to Kate's Alexander McQueen number. Tailoring her look to the trends of the time, Diana added a wide-brimmed hat and a white belt.

The major difference between the two looks was how Kate modernised it with her hairstyle. The princess wore her brunette locks in tumbling mermaid waves. The front sections were pulled back and pinned to create a snatched look and to ensure that her hat didn't overwhelm the look. Meanwhile, in the 90s, it was all about a shorter haircut for ladies like Princess Diana.

Kate's nod to Queen Elizabeth

Kate is known for her individual sense of style, but she isn't afraid to pay tribute to the royal ladies who have come before her. On 21 April, she joined senior members of the royal family at a Buckingham Palace reception to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's birth.

Rather aptly, the royal styled her lilac Emilia Wickstead dress with two pieces of jewellery from the late Queen's collection – her Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings, a wedding gift from 1947, and her three-strand pearl necklace.
