As Sarah Jessica Parker joined Queen Camilla at New York’s iconic Public Library, her fashion choice instantly set the tone.

Stepping into the historic venue, the Sex and the City star delivered a look that felt like a beautifully considered homage to Princess Diana.

Her baby-pink polka dot dress, complete with a frilled collar and double-breasted detailing, echoed the late royal’s signature 1980s silhouettes.

Standing beside the Queen, who opted for a refined navy crepe silk coat dress by Fiona Clare adorned with a meaningful Britannia brooch once owned by the late Queen, the contrast was striking.

Where Camilla embodied regal tradition, Sarah brought a soft, romantic reinterpretation of royal style that felt both nostalgic and entirely modern.

The occasion itself was no ordinary engagement, hosted at the New York Public Library as part of the Queen’s Reading Room initiative, the event brought together a glittering mix of literary and cultural figures from both sides of the Atlantic.

Around 100 guests, including authors, broadcasters and creatives, gathered to celebrate the enduring power of books and storytelling.

Introducing the Queen, US TV host Jenna Bush Hager remarked: "Books are part of her DNA." It was a sentiment that set the tone for the afternoon and one the Queen herself expanded on in a deeply personal speech.

Camilla described the venue as "one of the world’s greatest libraries and somewhere I have always wanted to visit," before reflecting on the roots of her lifelong passion for reading.

"Indeed, the first Americans I knew and loved were the characters I met in my treasured children’s novels: Little Women, What Katy Did, Charlotte’s Web… I knew, even then, that books are the best friend you can have – in good times and bad."

For Sarah, the moment carried an added layer of meaning. The New York Public Library is etched into pop culture history as the setting of one of Sex and the City’s most unforgettable scenes, Carrie Bradshaw’s ill-fated wedding day.

This time, however, the atmosphere was far from dramatic. As the actress and the Queen descended the grand staircase together, they appeared relaxed and engaged, echoing that famous moment but rewriting its narrative entirely.

Their connection felt genuine. Speaking ahead of the meeting, Sarah described the Queen’s visit as "great for all New Yorkers," adding: "I think anytime we have an opportunity to talk about our libraries and talk about literacy… I'm thrilled that we get to be in this extraordinary building… and highlight this extraordinary repository for these documents."

Reflecting on their previous encounter, she shared: "It was, for all of us, a thrill… she seems to love reading as much as a lot of us greedy readers… she just showed so much hospitality… to have her shine a spotlight on reading and the relationship between a reader and a book and how it changes lives and enriches lives and cultivates empathy and curiosity, I’m so grateful."

Following the reception, the pair explored the library’s treasures, including rare literary works and artefacts marking America’s 250th anniversary. In a particularly charming moment, the Queen gifted a handcrafted soft toy named Roo to complete the library’s Winnie the Pooh collection, a gesture that delighted the young children present.
