2026 Oscar nominations: Jessie Buckley's first nod, a new record and all the other big surprises


The 2026 Academy Award nominations were announced by actors Lewis Pullman and Danielle Brooks on Thursday 22 January from Beverly Hills

The 2026 Oscar nominations have been announced – and it was a huge day for Jessie Buckley, Kate Hudson and Sinners!

The 24 categories were announced by Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick) and Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black) on Thursday 22 January – and included a brand new category for Best Casting.

Sinners led the way with a whopping 16 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor for Michael B Jordan's impressive dual role in the vampire horror.

The movie's costume designer, Ruth E Carter, also received a nod for Best Costume Design – becoming the most-nominated Black woman in Oscar history across any category.

Sinners beat the previous record of 14 nominations, which were all held by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016).

Meanwhile, Jessie Buckley earned her much-anticipated first nomination for Best Actress in Hamnet, while Kate Hudson swiped her second-ever nod in the same category for Song Sung Blue

Best Actor nominations included Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet and Wagner Moura.

Teyana Taylor in One Battle After Another

One Battle After Another picked up 13 nods, including Best Picture, Director and Leading Actor, while Frankenstein, Sentimental Value and Marty Supreme remained neck in neck with nine each.

Among the snubs, Paul Mescal missed out on Best Supporting Actor in his role as William Shakespeare in Hamnet, as did Ariana Grande for Supporting Actress in Wicked: For Good

Meanwhile, Chase Infiniti missed out on a Best Actress nomination for her breakout role in One Battle after Another.

The 98th Academy Awards will be held on 15 March at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, where TV host Conan O'Brien is set to host.
