If you're a mystery thriller lover who doesn't mind the same old familiar formula time and again, Imperfect Women is the show for you. The eight-part Apple TV series opens on well-trodden territory: a woman is brought in for questioning after her best friend is found murdered. Fortunately, that person is Kerry Washington, who stars brilliantly alongside Elisabeth Moss (both of whom serve as executive producers) and Kate Mara in this intriguing mystery series that has enough twists and turns to keep viewers engaged.

Based on Araminta Hall's 2020 novel of the same name, the series revolves around three best friends: businesswoman and philanthropist Eleanor, wealthy housewife Nancy and stay-at-home mum Mary – all with varying financial situations but who are bound by years of friendship. It's a dynamic that has inevitably drawn comparisons to Big Little Lies – and with the same streaming platform behind it, it's no huge surprise.

In the hours leading up to Nancy's death, the trio gather to celebrate Mary's birthday. During the evening, Nancy confides in Eleanor that she is continuing an affair with a mystery man. When Eleanor points out that it's making her unhappy, Nancy admits of her husband Robert: "It's just when I'm with him, I feel powerless."

A body is found

Cut to a few hours later, and Eleanor gets a call from Robert who threatens to call the police because Nancy hasn't returned home that night. Rushing over to talk him down, Eleanor – who is later revealed to hold a flame for her dead friend's husband – tells Robert about the affair and he demands a name. David is the one Eleanor gives, and as the conversation wraps up, the police arrive to announce that Nancy's body has been found.
