Kara Tointon's unexpected appearance in new Hunger Games film surprises fans


The prequel film, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is set 24 years before the events of the original movie and follows a young Haymitch Abernathy

The official trailer for the highly anticipated new Hunger Games film, Sunrise on the Reaping, arrived on Tuesday, showcasing the film's stellar cast, which includes Hollywood stars Elle Fanning, Ralph Fiennes, Maya Hawke and Kieran Culkin.

But some eagle-eyed fans spotted a brief appearance from EastEnders star Kara Tointon, who plays Willamae Abernathy, the mother of lead Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zara).

The dystopian franchise's latest installment, which arrives in cinemas on 20 November, is based on the prequel novel following a young Haymitch, played in the original trilogy by Woody Harrelson, as he's selected to compete in the 50th Hunger Games.

In a brief moment from the trailer, a confused-looking Willamae Abernathy is seen clutching onto her younger son Sid, while watching from the crowd. 

Taking to social media, fans shared their surprise at Kara's appearance.

"Shaking at ar Dawn Swann in the new Hunger Games trailer… Hollywood Queen," wrote one fan on social media, referencing her EastEnders character, which she portrayed from 2005 to 2009. 

A second fan penned: "I knew it was her! Had to do a double take LOL."

Kara shared the exciting news of her casting on social media in December last year. Posting a photo of the poster on Instagram, the actress praised her on-screen son's performance, writing: "Only a year to wait. Buzzing to be a part of this incredible cast. @josephzada … a superstar."

What to expect from The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping

Set 24 years before the events of the first film, which starred Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark respectively, the upcoming prequel tells the story of a young Haymitch Abernathy as he's chosen to fight in the 50th Hunger Games.

The film begins on the morning of the reaping of the second Quarter Quell.

Not only is there the promise of cameos from original stars Jennifer and Josh, but the cast list is seriously impressive. Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Jesse Plemons, Ralph Fiennes and Glenn Close are among the film's big names. 

Meanwhile, Francis Lawrence, who directed all Hunger Games films except the very first one, is back at the helm.

 The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping arrives in cinemas on 20 November.
