Billy Elliot  was one of the first classic films of the new century following the coming-of-age story's theatrical release in 2000. The movie served as a launching point for a young Jamie Bell, and it has since been adapted for the West End and Broadway.

The film, which also starred the likes of Julie Walters, Gary Lewis and Stephen Mangan, will be turning 26 this September and its stars have gone on to have incredible careers since the film first aired.

Here's what they've been doing since…

Jamie led the cast of the film

Jamie Bell

Jamie was just 14 when the film was released, serving as his silver screen debut. The star's portrayal of the titular Billy won him the BAFTA Award for Best Actor, with him becoming the youngest recipient of the award.

Jamie followed up his performance by appearing in Deathwatch and Nicholas Nickleby, but he later landed major parts in the likes of The Adventures of Tintin and 2015's Fantastic Four, where he played The Thing. The star, now aged 40, has also appeared in Skin, Rocketman and Rosebush Pruning, the latter of which was released earlier this year.

In 2012, he married American actress Evan Rachel Wood; however, the pair split two years after their marriage. Since 2017, he has been married to the actress Kate Mara, who has appeared in 24, Pose, and A Teacher. The couple met while filming Fantastic Four. Jamie is a father to three children, a son whom he shares with Evan, and two children he shares with Kate.

Adam played an older version of the titular character in the classic film. The star has only appeared in two other films since Billy Elliot's release: Bourne to Dance and The Soldier's Tale; however, his career is still blossoming.

Instead of being a movie star, Adam focuses on his dancing and stage career, and he has appeared in productions like On Your Toes and Singin' in the Rain. He has also worked as a choreographer, winning awards for his work on On Your Toes, while being nominated for Grand Hotel.

In the same year that Billy Eliott released, Adam married his long-term partner, Sarah Wildor, who is a professional ballet dancer. The couple share two children.

Julie has appeared in several franchises

Julie Walters

Julie won the hearts of the nation when she played Billy's ballet teacher in the film, and the actress has since cemented herself as a national treasure with her roles as Molly Weasley in the Harry Potter films and Mrs Brown in the Paddington movies.

Julie, who received a damehood in 2017, has also appeared in the Mamma Mia! film series, Calendar Girls, Becoming Jane, Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool and Mary Poppins Returns.

Billy Elliot was a pivotal role for Dame Julie, who won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress. Julie has since won two Best Actress BAFTA Awards for her work on My Beautiful Son and Murder. She is also the recipient of two Emmy Awards and a Laurence Olivier Award.

In 2018, the actress underwent treatment for Stage III bowel cancer, entering remission following surgery and chemotherapy. However, the star's health continued to impact her, and in 2023, she had to withdraw from a role in Truelove after feeling unwell.

Gary played Billy's unsupportive father in the hit film, and the role saw him win Best Actor at the Flaiano Film Festival, while being nominated for three further awards.

Gary's career has continued to go from strength to strength, with the star appearing in the likes of Supervolcano, Gunpowder, Treason & Plot, Outlander, Vigil, The Bay, Gangs of New York, Eragon and The Marvels.

In 2010, the star was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the British Academy Television Awards for his work on Mo, where he played Labour politician Adam Ingram and reunited with his Billy Elliot co-star, Dame Julie Walters.

Jamie wasn't the only child actor in the film, as he was joined by Stuart Wells, who played Michael Caffrey. Stuart only appeared in 2004's The Reckoning before calling time on his acting career and joining the British Army.

He served until 2008, achieving the rank of corporal, and he completed three tours, including two in Iraq.

The actor has since starred in Rush, Postman Pat: The Movie, Breathe, Jane Hall, Episodes and The Split. He has also served as a narrator on shows celebrating beloved British sitcoms, including 'Allo 'Allo, Keeping Up Appearances and One Foot in the Grave.
