As a Kylie Jenner obsessive, I was disappointed not to be able to swoon over her makeup at the SAG Actor Awards on Sunday night. Rather than walk the red carpet with his partner, Timothee Chalamet took his mum, Nicole Flender, meaning we were denied a Jenner sighting.
While I was miffed to miss Kylie, it did allow me to take in all the other beauty looks on the red carpet, and one trend ruled the roost at the star-studded occasion – blurred lips.
Blurred lips
The last few years have been all about the resurgence of the heavily lined, 1990s-inspired contrasting lips. You know the ones, a deep brown liner with a lighter gloss inside. Think Mariah Carey and JLo when they first appeared on the scene.
Blurred lips are the anti-liner lips, plump and softly shaded rather than sharply outlined. They give an effortlessly polished vibe, without looking like you've tried too hard.
Emma Stone is the queen of the blurred lip, with her makeup artist, Nina Park, using the LV Rouge Satin Lipstick in 104 Beige Machina, £120 / $160, for Emma's awards look.
Newcomer Odessa A'Zion, who appeared alongside Timmy in Marty Supreme, nailed the look on Sunday night, with her barely there makeup perfectly complemented by low-effort lips, while White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood wore a glossy take on blurred lips, created with Sisley's Phyto-Levres Perfect lip liner in Beige Naturel, £51 / $61, topped with the brand's Phyto-Rouge Shine 21 Sheer Rosewood, £56 / $47.
One Battle After Another actress Chase Inifiniti leaned into the glossy blurred approach too, wearing FARA HOMIDI's Smudge Contour lip pencil in Riche & Fawn, £34 / $41, with the Soft Glass Lip Plumping Oil in Pomme, £43 / $52, on top.
Applying blurred lips
The key to blurred lips is choosing a liner close to your natural lip tone. Sketch the shape around your lips, then blend it inward with your fingers to avoid harsh edges.
Follow with a matte lipstick to build a velvety base or layer a slightly warmer gloss on top to create dimension and softness for an effortless, lived-in look.
I tried the blurred lips trend for myself last week (fun fact, my friend asked if I'd had lip filler after trying the look – testament to its plumping powers), with YSL training manager Emma Backhouse applying the look for me – and she gave me a great tip.
"Apply YSL's Touche Éclat, £24 / $38.50, around the lip line before you apply your lip products. It gives more plumpness and volume to the lips as well as more longevity – your lip liner will last all day long."
I wore YSL's Lovenude Lip Blusher, £40 / $48, (Dua Lipa likes it) with the Lovenude Kiss Shaper, £26 / $31, which blended together seamlessly for the plumped-up, yet still natural look, but Merit's latest launch, Signature Lip Blush, is another great option for the laidback lip look – Hailey Bieber loves the shade Bespoke, and if it's good enough for her…
